🎾 A New Spin on Tennis in Ormond Beach
In the heart of The Trails neighborhood, a local family is giving a longtime tennis facility a thoughtful refresh. Six months after purchasing Trailside Tennis Club — formerly the Trails Racquet Club — Asaf and Avi Breier are working to transform the space into a vibrant hub for players of all ages and skill levels.
The couple relocated from Austin, Texas, bringing with them years of coaching experience and a vision centered on mentorship and community. Asaf, who grew up immersed in competitive tennis, is especially passionate about developing junior athletes. He’s currently finalizing a partnership with DME Academy in Daytona Beach, aiming to launch a student tennis cohort as early as August.
The Breiers are also broadening access. While the club sits within The Trails, it’s open to the public, offering memberships and guest passes. New programming includes Mommy & Me classes, afterschool sessions, camps and free community try-out days. Thanks to USTA funding, red clay courts — a nod to European play — are now part of the experience.
Beyond the baseline, the couple envisions social events, community gatherings and even a future onsite restaurant. Their goal is simple: create a welcoming place where tennis and connection go hand in hand.

⛵ Beached Sailboat Could Cost Up to $80K
Just up the coast, a different kind of centerpiece has captured attention — a 45-foot sailboat stranded on the sands of Flagler Beach.
The vessel ran aground near North 21st Street on Jan. 24 during rough surf. First responders safely removed a couple and a child from the boat, and fuel was drained soon after. But nearly a month later, the sizable 1983 Stamas ketch remains lodged onshore.
Now classified as abandoned, the boat may cost the city between $50,000 and $80,000 to remove. Acting Police Chief Lance Blanchette said Flagler Beach plans to piggyback on a City of St. Augustine vessel removal contract and will present quotes to the City Commission once received. Grants and potential legal action to recover costs remain under consideration.
Meanwhile, the sailboat has become a local attraction. Beachgoers stroll by, snap photos and inspect what one resident described as a well-built ocean-going ketch that could, with significant investment, sail again.
For now, it’s part maritime mystery, part photo backdrop — and a reminder that even scenic views sometimes come with a hefty price tag.

🔥 Brush Fire Contained, But Nerves Still Raw
Residents near Daytona Beach’s Mosaic subdivision are breathing a cautious sigh of relief.
A 160-acre brush fire that ignited Monday night is now 100% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service. Crews continue to monitor the area, cutting fire lines and dousing hot spots to prevent flare-ups.
For nearby homeowners, the experience was unsettling. Some described ash falling like rain and the glow of flames edging close to houses. Families evacuated quickly, grabbing loved ones and essentials before returning once conditions stabilized.
Firefighters and law enforcement maintained an all-hands-on-deck response, with helicopters drawing water from neighborhood ponds and crews carving protective barriers into dry grass. Despite the scare, officials report no property damage.
While containment marks a major milestone, residents say the event underscores how quickly conditions can change during dry spells. For now, vigilance remains the watchword as crews ensure the fire stays fully under control.

🏁 $450K Boost for Pediatric Care at Halifax Health
The NASCAR Foundation awarded the health system $450,000 — including $350,000 to expand pediatric telemedicine services and $100,000 to fund a licensed Child Life Specialist. The announcement came during the Foundation’s High Speed Hold ’Em Poker Tournament at Daytona International Speedway’s Rolex Lounge, part of its 20th anniversary celebration and the 25th anniversary of Halifax Health’s Speediatrics program.
The telemedicine funding will broaden access to expert pediatric care, particularly for families who may face geographic or logistical barriers. Meanwhile, the Child Life Specialist will provide emotional support, education and play-based coping tools for young patients and their siblings.
Foundation leaders noted the grant continues a legacy of supporting children’s health initiatives in the region. For Halifax Health, the investment represents more than technology or staffing — it’s about caring for the whole child during life’s most vulnerable moments.
