📢 Teachers Rally for Fair Pay
Volusia County educators are making their voices heard—loudly and clearly. Following a stalled bargaining process, Volusia United Educators (VUE) held a powerful demonstration outside the VCS District Administration Complex on Oct. 14. At the heart of the protest: frustration over a proposed 1.5% cost-of-living raise, far short of the 4% requested.
Union steward Susan Holbrook delivered emotional testimonies from fellow teachers, some of whom are selling plasma or working multiple jobs just to make ends meet. “As teachers, we live near poverty, while expected to give, give, give,” one statement read.
VUE's original $13.8 million proposal also included paid maternity and bereavement leave, retention bonuses, and acknowledgment of advanced degrees. The district countered with a significantly slimmer $3.9 million offer. VUE President Elizabeth Albert urged the board to “prioritize your people” and condemned the district’s lowball response as demeaning.
Support for the teachers even came from unlikely allies—the Moms for Liberty Volusia Chapter—after VUE received a letter limiting their protest tools. As the board listens but remains tight-lipped due to the legal impasse, frustration among educators is mounting.

🎨 Family Fun in Focus at OMAM
Shifting from protest to paintbrushes, the Ormond Memorial Art Museum (OMAM) spotlighted Rachel Scheerer and her daughter Lily as its featured family during October’s Free Family Art Night. This dynamic duo isn’t new to OMAM—Lily is a seasoned art camper, fondly remembering her favorite wildlife-themed sessions.
The Oct. 3 event brought another evening of “cool and fun” art-making, with supplies provided by the museum. Designed for creativity and connection, Family Art Nights are a recurring highlight on OMAM’s calendar, offering a perfect first-Friday activity for locals looking to unwind with a bit of watercolor or clay.
The next art night is set for Nov. 7 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.—a great excuse to break out your inner Picasso, no matter your age.

🚨 Boat Builder Busted—Again
For Deltona’s Jeffrey Love, it’s déjà vu with handcuffs. The 56-year-old “boat builder” was arrested again on fraud and grand theft charges after allegedly conning five customers out of over $200,000. Each paid Love to build a custom airboat—and each got nothing but delays and broken promises.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office wrapped up a 9-month investigation revealing a clear pattern of deception. Making matters worse, Love was already on felony probation for a nearly identical scam.
In addition to new fraud charges, he’s facing penalties for violating probation and driving with a suspended license. Now sitting in the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond, Love’s future looks as murky as the waters those airboats never touched. Authorities are still working to recover funds for the victims.

“Ceviche28” Brings Peruvian-Mexican Flair to Ormond Beach (Frida’s Re-born) 🌮🐟
Ormond Beach food lovers, get ready for something truly special! The father-and-son duo of Pedro and Peter Navarez have opened Ceviche28, a fresh new fusion concept blending the bold, colorful flavors of Peru and Mexico right in the heart of town.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Pedro made waves with his original Ceviche28 in Vero Beach — a hit known for its creative seafood and vibrant dishes. Now, he’s brought that same energy north to 195 W. Granada Blvd., in the former Frida’s location. And yes, Pedro was also the owner behind Frida’s and the still popular Agave Fresh Mex in Ormond Beach. This time, he and Peter are serving up something entirely new, while still honoring their family’s signature flair for great food and warm hospitality.

The menu at Ceviche28 is a celebration of fresh ingredients and bold combinations — from zesty ceviches to sizzling chicken and steak plates that burst with flavor. Pair your meal with a handcrafted cocktail from the full bar, and enjoy a perfect evening on the inviting outdoor patio.

Pedro and Peter invite all lovers of Mexican and Latin cuisine to stop by, say hello, and discover their unique spin on fusion dining. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick bite, a relaxed dinner, or a night out with friends, Ceviche28 is the place to be.

Come hungry, leave smiling — and see why everyone’s talking about Ormond’s newest taste sensation! And, show this Business Spotlight article to the server on your phone and receive 1 free House Margarita with your entre’ when 2 people are dining. Offer expires 10/31/25
