The Good Life Charters Celebrates 10 Years at Tomoka State Park

The Good Life Charters, based at Tomoka State Park, is celebrating 10 years of operation. Launched in 2014 by Scott and Ashley Cornelius, the business grew from Scott’s lifelong dream of becoming a boat captain. The couple, who also own the Tomoka Outpost, started with fishing charters but have since transitioned to mostly pleasure cruises, showcasing Scott’s deep knowledge of the local area. The charter remains the only legally permitted fishing and tour boat operation at the park, catering primarily to locals and returning guests. In 2015, the Corneliuses also purchased the Tomoka Outpost, allowing them to fully embrace the lifestyle they envisioned. Over the years, Scott has appeared on TV shows and contributed to local guides, further establishing his expertise. Today, they reflect on the success of their business, grateful for the opportunities it has provided to live “The Good Life.”

Local Community Mobilizes to Aid Hurricane Helene Victims in North Carolina

A grassroots effort in Volusia County is helping provide relief to North Carolina residents impacted by Hurricane Helene. The initiative began when local resident Katie McCafferty saw images of the storm’s devastation and felt compelled to act. Coordinating with Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), McCafferty connected with Angelina Strickhouser of Alberto’s Pizza in Port Orange and pilot Mike Partovi. The group turned Alberto’s into a hub for donations, gathering hygiene products for storm victims. Partovi, a longtime pilot, has volunteered to fly the supplies to North Carolina, delivering them directly to hard-hit areas. The community has responded with overwhelming generosity, eager to help those in need. With donations pouring in, the effort is expected to continue through the week, with several drop-off locations across Volusia County.

Florida Launches 'Operation Blue Ridge' to Aid Hurricane Helene Recovery in North Carolina

Governor Ron DeSantis announced the launch of "Operation Blue Ridge" this week, a coordinated effort to send emergency responders from Florida to aid in disaster recovery following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in Tennessee and North Carolina. The storm, now recognized as one of the deadliest hurricanes of the 21st century, has claimed an estimated 137 lives, with hundreds still missing and billions of dollars in damages reported.

Several state agencies, including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Division of Emergency Management, and Florida National Guard, are mobilizing teams to the impacted regions. The Florida State Guard, alongside other emergency units, has already seen success. One early mission involved rescuing a mother and her infant from a life-threatening situation in western North Carolina.

An online portal has also been set up by Florida’s Division of Emergency Management to assist Floridians trapped in the affected area. The tool allows individuals to report their location and needs, ensuring a quicker response from rescue teams.

As the disaster continues to unfold, federal and state cooperation is intensifying. President Joe Biden is set to visit North Carolina to survey the damage and meet with emergency officials, while Gov. DeSantis has urged a concentrated federal response on the hardest-hit areas in North Carolina.

Disaster Relief Organizations Helping With Helene

The situation in Western North Carolina is dire as we have all seen. These organizations are all active in the area. Donations in any amount would be appreciated.

These are all reputable organizations however, we do not endorse or recommend any of these organizations. Use your own due diligence when donating.
