Daytona Beach to Appeal Federal Ruling on Unconstitutional Panhandling Law
AI Generated Photo
Daytona Beach has decided to appeal a federal judge’s ruling that struck down its panhandling regulations as unconstitutional. The July 18 decision by U.S. District Judge Wendy Berger found that the city's 2019 ordinance violated First Amendment rights by targeting specific types of donation requests. In response, city commissioners agreed to pay $80,000 to the four plaintiffs who sued, a compromise meant to reduce further litigation costs. The city is also burdened with $400,000 in legal fees from its attorney. The ruling means that Daytona Beach cannot enforce its panhandling rules, which prohibited solicitation near commercial and public areas. The city has since amended its security services contract to prevent enforcement of the panhandling ban. The legal battle continues as the city challenges the ruling.

Sharewear Website
Amanda Anderson, a former nurse from Volusia County, has developed the Sharewear band, a digital bracelet that provides critical medical and emergency information through a QR code. The innovation has been well-received by law enforcement in Volusia and Flagler counties, with New Smyrna Beach set to honor Anderson and her team for their contribution. The Sharewear band, which costs $20 to $30, does not require a subscription or app; instead, it can be scanned with a phone to access vital information. Since its launch in April, Anderson’s company has donated numerous bracelets and trained first responders on their use. A new geo-location feature is planned for release soon to further aid in locating individuals in emergencies. The Sharewear band is praised for enhancing safety and communication, especially for those with medical conditions or communication challenges. Checkout the website at https://www.sharewearshop.com/
