Volusia County to Host Free Celebration with Art, Expo, and Live Music
Ocean Center - Google Maps
Volusia County is inviting the community to "Celebrate Volusia" on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach. The free event, running from 2 to 5:30 p.m., will feature a community expo, art exhibit, family-friendly activities, and a live concert by the band Pablo Cruise. Attendees can enjoy face painting, a "Touch-A-Truck" display featuring emergency vehicles, and an opportunity to visit booths promoting local attractions such as the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. The expo will also offer information on county services, including voter registration and the new Park Volusia beach permit. Light refreshments will be available while supplies last, and additional food options will be provided by the Ocean Center’s concessions. Pablo Cruise is set to close the event with a performance of their hit songs from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Further details are available online and through social media.

Seabreeze High Teacher Balances Classroom Creativity with Surfing Passion
Tanner Norvell, a history teacher at Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, has found a balance between his passion for history and his love of surfing. Known for his engaging and lively classroom, Norvell uses an active teaching style that encourages collaboration and critical thinking. His approach has helped students see history as an exciting and dynamic subject, far from the typical dry stereotype. Inspired by his mother’s career in education, Norvell pursued teaching as a way to share his enthusiasm for life and learning. His passion for surfing complements his laid-back style, making him a relatable and approachable figure at school. Norvell’s ultimate goal is to instill in his students a sense of joy and excitement in their education, urging them to "stay stoked" and enjoy the learning process.

NWS Puts Volusia, Flagler on Alert as Tropical System Approaches Florida's Gulf Coast
A developing tropical system in the Caribbean is drawing attention from Florida residents, particularly in Volusia and Flagler counties. The National Hurricane Center has indicated a high chance of the system forming into a tropical depression or storm in the next 48 hours as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico. Meteorologists warn that while specific impacts are still uncertain, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential tornadoes are possible later in the week, with conditions expected to worsen by Thursday. Volusia County, which has already seen double its typical September rainfall, could face flooding, especially in areas near the St. Johns River. Flagler County is also monitoring rainfall closely. Residents are urged to finalize storm preparations and stay updated on the forecast.
How Fraudsters Target Purebred Cat Buyers-Steps to Avoid Falling Victim
Stock Photo
The growing prevalence of scams in the search for purebred kittens poses a significant challenge for potential buyers. Fraudsters are increasingly using stolen photos and fake social media accounts to impersonate legitimate breeders, luring buyers with attractive offers and then disappearing with their money. A seasoned breeder of Oriental Shorthair and Siamese cats stresses the importance of careful research when considering a purchase. Genuine breeders maintain professional websites, offer consistent photo updates, and provide transparent communication. Potential buyers should be cautious of breeders offering steep discounts, using untraceable payment methods, or refusing to provide detailed kitten information. Reviews should be examined critically, and buyers are encouraged to verify breeders' credentials with organizations like The International Cat Association (TICA). Ensuring the breeder follows proper regulations, including USDA licensing when applicable, adds further security to the adoption process. Vigilance is essential to avoid falling victim to these increasingly sophisticated scams.
