Volusia County Emergency Medical Services has earned the 2024 Mission: Lifeline bronze achievement award from the American Heart Association for its excellence in heart attack and stroke care. The award acknowledges the agency’s effective implementation of high standards of care, from the initial emergency call through hospital treatment. EMS personnel can provide critical interventions earlier than if patients arrived by car. Jim Judge, Emergency Services Director, highlighted the agency’s commitment to combining advanced technology with compassionate care. Volusia County EMS manages 70,000 calls and transports 54,000 patients annually.

Volusia County Schools Faces Financial Setbacks with $5 Million Return Due to Fewer Students

Volusia County Schools will return nearly $5 million to the state due to decreased enrollment, affecting the district's ability to increase salaries. Enrollment has dropped to 57,172 from about 64,000 pre-pandemic, a decline School Board Chair Jamie Haynes attributes to negative social media. The district’s proposed property tax rate for the 2024-2025 school year is 5.285 mills, slightly reduced from last year but still above the rollback rate. The final budget and tax rate will be decided in a public hearing on September 10.

Citizens Insurance Requests 13.5% Rate Increase Amid Market Transition

Citizens Property Insurance Corporation has requested a 13.5% rate increase, pending approval from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation by August 26. This move aims to transition its 1.2 million policyholders to the private market and ensure it does not compete unfairly with private insurers. The proposed hike has raised concerns among homeowners and association leaders, who are already struggling with high premiums, averaging nearly $11,000 annually. Critics argue that the increase could worsen financial pressures and prompt residents to consider moving.
