Volusia Under Watch as Hurricane Helene Approaches Florida Gulf Coast

NOAA Hurricane Center

Tropical Storm Helene is expected to become a hurricane tomorrow as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico, with forecasts suggesting it could make landfall in Florida’s Big Bend or Panhandle region on Thursday as a Category 3 storm. The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Volusia County, which could see winds of 25-35 mph, gusts up to 60 mph, 4-6 inches of rain, and storm surges of up to 3 feet. Conditions will begin to deteriorate tomorrow, with worsening winds and rain, hazardous ocean conditions, and a risk of tornadoes by Thursday. Volusia County officials are warning residents to prepare for severe weather, with sandbag distribution and school closures in place. Residents are urged to stay updated through the Volusia Emergency Management app, county social media accounts, and www.volusia.org.

Volusia County Schools Cancels Classes Thursday Due to Tropical Storm Helene

In response to Tropical Storm Helene, Volusia County Schools will cancel all after-school activities on Wednesday, September 25, except for Extended Day Enrichment Programs. All schools and district offices will be closed on Thursday, September 26, as the region braces for heavy rain, winds, and potential disruptions to bus services. Volusia County is now under a state of emergency declared by Governor Ron DeSantis, alongside a local emergency order issued by county officials.

No changes have been announced for Friday’s operations, including after-school programs and athletic events. Schools will not serve as storm shelters, but families are encouraged to check emails, district social media, and the VCS Storm Resource Center webpage for ongoing updates. Post-storm assessments will be conducted to ensure the safety of schools and bus routes, and future communication will provide details on how the district plans to make up the missed day.

Family’s Troubled Past Emerges in Case of Child Charged with School Threat

An 11-year-old Port Orange boy is facing charges after allegedly threatening a school shooting during a FaceTime call, where he reportedly displayed weapons and created a "kill list." Authorities arrested the Creekside Middle School student after discovering airsoft guns, knives, and the list at his home. The case has drawn attention due to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s decision to publicly name the boy, following a rise in school-related threats.

The boy remains in custody, as a judge denied a request for home confinement. His attorney argues that the threat was intended as a joke. Complicating the case is the boy’s family background; his mother, a local business owner, has a history of arrests, though her most recent legal troubles occurred before her son was born. Prosecutors are yet to decide if the boy will be charged as a juvenile or adult.
