💰 Volusia Proposes $1.064 Billion Budget
Volusia County's proposed $1.064 billion fiscal year 2026-27 budget would keep most property tax rates unchanged while continuing investments in essential services. Property taxes account for 42.8% of county revenue, and officials expect roughly $11.6 million in additional General Fund property tax revenue from new construction and rising property values. Residents would see one increase: a 2% bump in residential solid waste fees to $303 annually. The County Council voted 6-1 to approve maximum millage rates for advertising purposes, but those rates can still be lowered. With possible statewide property tax changes looming, officials say they're emphasizing healthy reserves and fiscal flexibility. Final public budget hearings are scheduled for Sept. 3 and Sept. 22.

🐢 Sea Turtles Smash Volusia Nesting Record
From county finances, we're heading to the beach, where Volusia County has something worth shell-ebrating. On July 22, the county officially broke its all-time sea turtle nesting record—with about 100 days still remaining in nesting season. A loggerhead nest in Daytona Beach Shores pushed the season total beyond the previous 2023 record of 1,516. As of that morning, Volusia had recorded 1,523 nests: 1,448 loggerhead, 63 green, 6 leatherback and 6 Kemp's Ridley nests. County records stretch back to 1988, making this a significant conservation milestone. Officials say Volusia's numbers mirror a statewide trend and credit conservation efforts begun decades ago, when many of the turtles now returning to Florida's beaches first hatched.
