Woman Killed, Husband Critical After Milton Hits Ormond Beach

Flooding on Audubon Drive - Courtesy Photo

Hurricane Milton struck Florida’s East Coast early Thursday, leading to two deaths in Ormond Beach, Volusia County, amid heavy rains, flooding, and power outages. An elderly couple was trapped when a tree fell on their home, resulting in the woman's death, while her husband remains in critical condition. Another resident, experiencing respiratory distress, could not be reached by emergency services due to severe weather. Thousands of homes sustained damage, and a broken water main disrupted supply in Ormond-By-The-Sea, prompting officials to ask residents to conserve water. The city has enforced a curfew and advises against non-essential travel due to debris-covered roads. Bridges, initially closed due to high winds, have since reopened, though beach access remains restricted. Recovery efforts, including road clearing and well-being checks, are ongoing as the community begins to assess the storm's toll. Eastbound traffic on bridges to the beachside was halted at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday due to sustained wind force. The Granada Bridge reopened at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Ormond Beach Police Department.

Local Artist to Create Postcard-Inspired Mural in Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach is expanding its public art with a new mural approved by the City Commission on October 2. The mural, designed in the style of a vintage postcard, will feature the words “Greetings from Ormond Beach” and be installed on a west-facing wall at 200 E. Granada Blvd., near Swillerbees Craft Donuts. Capturing the spirit of Florida’s 1950s golden era, the mural pays tribute to the city’s heritage by depicting landmarks such as the Ormond Hotel, Chief Tomokie, and the old Ormond-by-the-Sea pier. Daytona Beach artist Sean Johnson, who has been creating murals for over three decades, will paint the piece. This is his first city-commissioned project, and he expressed his appreciation for the chance to contribute to Ormond Beach’s cultural landscape.

Volusia County Weighs Rural Boundary to Address Flooding, Curb Development

Volusia County is considering a rural boundary to mitigate flooding concerns, spurred by new developments. Over the coming months, county staff will draft proposals for a potential boundary to limit construction near wetlands, drawing on examples from Seminole and Orange counties. The proposed amendment could appear on the November 2026 ballot.

During a recent council meeting, residents voiced concerns that new subdivisions contribute to stormwater runoff, worsening flooding issues. While some argue that better enforcement of current land-use rules would suffice, others support a rural boundary as an additional measure.

Council Chair Jeff Brower emphasized its potential to control urban sprawl, while Councilman Don Dempsey proposed increasing funds for conservation initiatives like Volusia Forever. County Manager George Recktenwald assured that a team is exploring various solutions for council review in March 2025. Public input will shape the final proposal, ensuring community involvement in addressing development-induced flooding.

Do you think Volusia County should take steps to curb development?

Good Vibes Restaurant Eyes November Opening in Ormond Beach

Photo: Connor Walter

Good Vibes, a new restaurant at 165 N. Yonge St. in Ormond Beach, is nearing its opening after a delay in receiving a state license. Initially planned for September, the launch is now expected in November. The venture, led by a group of local owners including longtime restaurateur Roger Labrie, aims to create a coastal, family-style atmosphere. Labrie, with 40 years in the industry, recalls his early days helping his mother at Captain’s Table, a former local favorite.

Good Vibes will serve breakfast and lunch starting at 7 a.m., offering traditional favorites like omelets and Eggs Benedict, alongside newer options such as avocado toast and acai bowls. Fresh baked goods and daily specials will also feature on the menu. The restaurant’s interior reflects a vibrant, beachy vibe, and the owners hope to contribute to their community.
