🇺🇸 25 Years Later, a First Responder Remembers

As the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, retired NYPD officer Marc Pedevillano is remembering the day he headed toward Manhattan while others were trying to escape. After learning the second World Trade Center tower had been struck, Pedevillano packed several uniforms and reported for duty, eventually working at Ground Zero.

Now a community outreach officer with the Ormond Beach Police Department, Pedevillano says what stays with him is not only the devastation, but also the humanity that followed. From volunteers serving meals to agencies pitching in wherever they could, he remembers a city united by service. His hope 25 years later is simple: that people remember the sacrifices and compassion that defined those difficult days.

🍔 White Castle Slides Into Daytona

Daytona Beach is about to get a little more square. White Castle will open its first Daytona Beach restaurant on Sept. 22 at 1944 LPGA Blvd., with a 9 a.m. ribbon-cutting followed by a day of festivities.

The restaurant will be only the fourth freestanding White Castle in Florida and is expected to bring 60 jobs to Volusia County. The 105-year-old burger chain entered Florida relatively recently, opening in Clermont in 2021 and expanding into the Orlando area. Another location is planned for St. Augustine.

Company leaders say Daytona Beach's distinctive character made it an appealing destination for the next “Castle.” For local fans of the chain's famous sliders, the drive to satisfy a Crave is about to get considerably shorter.

🔎 Outside Attorney to Investigate School Board Complaint

An outside employment attorney will investigate an internal complaint involving Volusia County School Board member Donna Brosemer, according to two board members. The board unanimously approved hiring attorney Deborah C. Brown at $300 per hour to conduct what the agreement describes as an impartial investigation.

The district has declined to release the complaint while the investigation remains active. Board member Krista Goodrich said an employee raised concerns about Brosemer, while Brosemer says she has not yet been told the substance of the allegation. An earlier district email indicated the chief of communications had filed a complaint concerning comments Brosemer posted on social media.

Brosemer voted for the investigation, while questioning its scope, potential cost and what authority the board ultimately has to discipline an elected member.

🅿️ Flagler Beach Moves Toward Paid Parking

After decades of discussion, Flagler Beach is moving closer to ending free parking along its shoreline. City commissioners have selected a vendor to operate a paid parking program along State Road A1A and in city lots, with a launch currently targeted for mid-2027.

Plenty of details remain unsettled, including parking rates, enforcement hours, zones and the number of resident permits. One point is clearer: Flagler Beach property owners are expected to receive at least one free parking pass.

Visitors and some local businesses are already raising concerns that another expense could discourage beach trips and customer traffic. With the vendor selected, city officials will now negotiate a contract and work through the finer points of a program that has been debated in Flagler Beach for more than 30 years.
