📷 FDOT Orders License Plate Readers Removed

Automated license plate readers must be removed from state-maintained roads across Florida following a directive from the Florida Department of Transportation. According to an FDOT memo obtained by WESH 2 News, the agency is revoking general-use permits allowing local law enforcement agencies to place automated license plate recognition systems within rights-of-way on the State Highway System.

Local agencies have 30 days to remove affected devices, after which FDOT says it will remove those that remain. The statewide action follows Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s announcement that license plate readers in the county were being shut down immediately. The technology, including Flock cameras, has generated debate in Florida over privacy, data sharing and the expanding role of automated surveillance in law enforcement accompanied by numerous stories of abuse by “authorized” users.

🐈 Volusia’s TNR Program Passes 1,100 Cats

Volusia County’s Trap/Neuter/Return program has spayed or neutered more than 1,100 community cats so far in 2026, helping humanely reduce feral and unowned cat populations. Residents can trap cats and bring them to the Volusia County Animal Care Clinic, where they are sterilized, vaccinated and ear-tipped before being returned to their familiar territory.

The county says TNR can gradually shrink colonies while reducing behaviors such as fighting, roaming and spraying. Services are free for community cats from unincorporated Volusia County and participating municipalities, while others may pay a $65 fee. Drop-offs are available most Tuesdays on a first-come, first-served basis. Program details and participating municipalities are available at www.volusia.gov/animalservices.

⚡ Paradise Pointe Salutes FPL Crews

Paradise Pointe Assisted Living and Memory Care staff and some residents recently paid a special visit to Florida Power & Light, thanking linemen and utility crews ahead of the busiest stretch of storm season. Residents and staff arrived with lunch, gift cards, cozies and handwritten notes recognizing the crews’ long hours and demanding work.

The visit carried extra meaning for residents Louis “Louie” Opera, 98, and Walter Baumann, 87. Both spent 65 years working as electricians and were members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in New York after serving in the military. Paradise Pointe CEO Darlinda Copeland said the gathering provided an opportunity to recognize those carrying on a tradition of service — before the next storm puts those crews to work.

🎣 New Flagler Beach Pier Skips the Bait Shop

When the rebuilt Flagler Beach Pier welcomes visitors, one familiar feature won’t return. The City Commission decided the new pier will open without a bait shop after reviewing its previous revenue and operating costs. Instead, the former bait shop space will be designated for lifeguards.

Pier admission will initially be free, although commissioners are exploring other revenue options, including potentially connecting access with a future paid-parking system. The previous pier was severely damaged by hurricanes Ian and Nicole in 2022 and demolished in 2025. Construction on the $16 million replacement began in January and was reported 60% complete in June. The new pier is targeted to open in early 2027, with tentative operating hours of 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
