🏇 We'll lead with the story that has already made national headlines, because it happened right here and it is genuinely extraordinary. On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4:25 p.m., a 58-year-old Holly Hill man named Bryan J. Parker drove his blue Ford Mustang through the security gate at Daytona Beach International Airport, proceeded onto the taxiway, and very nearly struck an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University plane that was actively taxiing. He then got out of his car and attempted to board multiple aircraft. An airport operations technician chased him down and pulled him out of one plane, got him seated on the tailgate of his truck — at which point Parker jumped off and ran toward another aircraft before being apprehended a second time and placed in handcuffs.
Parker told investigators he was intoxicated on alcohol and drugs and did not remember what led to any of it. The charge sheet that followed is, to put it mildly, comprehensive: aircraft piracy, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, trespassing on the operational area of an airport, two counts of indecent exposure, criminal mischief, DUI with property damage, refusal to submit to DUI testing, and third DUI offense within ten years. The Volusia Sheriff's Office Domestic Security Unit and the FBI both responded. Parker is being held without bond.

On a note that may require a trip to your freezer: the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a public health alert for a line of Blackwing Organic Meats and Blackwing Meats beef and pork products produced between April 2024 and March 2026. The products were made without federal inspection and, in several cases, carry a false USDA mark of approval. Items potentially affected include vacuum-packed New York strip steaks, ground beef, beef stew meat, beef steak strips, ground pork, and boneless center-cut pork chops, all under the Blackwing brand name. No illnesses have been confirmed, but the FSIS is urging consumers who have purchased any of these products to throw them away or return them to the store — not eat them.

Now, something to look forward to on your morning commute. Ellianos Coffee — a Florida-born drive-thru chain founded in Lake City in 2002 — is coming to 341 W. Granada Blvd. in Ormond Beach, in front of the ALDI. Construction is already 50% complete, according to the city's latest development report. Local franchisees Trevor and Katelynn Hickman will run the location, and they sound genuinely excited about it, which is always a good sign. The menu leans Italian-inspired — think Caffe Dolce, Tuscany Toffee lattes, Milan Mint Mochas — alongside smoothies, bagels, apple fritters, and grit bowls. Non-coffee drinkers can opt for a Peachy Keen or a Sicilian Red Bull Rush, which are both real things you can order. Ellianos will join Dutch Bros, which was approved for 764 W. Granada back in December. Granada Boulevard's caffeine corridor is filling in nicely.
✦
Finally, some infrastructure news that will matter to anyone who drives Hand Avenue regularly — which is to say, a lot of people. A $5.1 million road project is now underway on the stretch between Clyde Morris Boulevard and Nova Road. The western end, currently just two lanes, will be widened to four. The eastern end, a somewhat chaotic five-lane configuration, will be trimmed down to four lanes with dedicated turn lanes at specific intersections. The county explains the logic plainly: five-lane roads give drivers a lot of freedom to turn anywhere they like, which creates a lot of conflict points and, consequently, a lot of incidents. Focused turn lanes reduce that friction considerably.
The project will also add a sidewalk and a median through the corridor. Worth noting for regular visitors to the 7-Eleven at Nova and Hand: that driveway is too close to the intersection to be safely accessible once the new configuration is in place, so plan your approach accordingly. The project is funded through impact fees and proportionate fair share dollars, and completion is expected by February 2027. Williamson Boulevard's widening project, running from Strickland Range Road to Hand Avenue, is expected to wrap up even sooner — October 2026. The roads are, slowly, catching up with the growth.
Ed. Note: The original story confuses the eastern and western ends of the roadway. We have corrected our version.
