🌹 Rose Villa Owner Looks Toward a New Chapter

Rose Villa Southern Table & Bar abruptly closed Aug. 28 amid employee claims of unpaid wages and allegations of a difficult workplace under restaurant operator Pat Sullivan. Employees protested outside the Ormond Beach landmark, while Sullivan could not be reached for comment.

Property owner and local developer Bill Jones said he was unaware of the employee concerns and was blindsided by the closure. Now, his focus is on preserving the historic restaurant’s identity and finding the right operator to move it forward. Jones plans to carefully vet potential tenants to operate the restaurant while maintaining the Rose Villa name and its Southern cuisine. After previously investing money with Sullivan to help keep the restaurant operating, he said his priority is finding dependable management and reopening as quickly — and carefully — as possible.

🏫 School Board Member Calls for Fact-Based Budget Talks

Volusia County School Board District 2 member Krista Goodrich is calling for more informed, year-round discussion of the district’s roughly billion-dollar budget, emphasizing that public statements by elected officials can influence families, employees and taxpayers.

In a commentary responding to fellow board member Donna Brosemer’s concerns about budget oversight, Goodrich said the board has multiple opportunities throughout the year to examine finances, meet with district staff and discuss spending. She also highlighted the distinction between capital funding, such as proceeds from property sales, and money available for recurring operating expenses. While disagreeing with several of Brosemer’s characterizations, Goodrich said she supports making budget review an ongoing conversation. Her broader message: elected officials should ask difficult questions while grounding public discussions in district records and Florida school-finance rules.

🐻 Volusia Included in Expanded Bear Hunt

Florida’s bear hunt will return in December with more permits available statewide, including permits covering Volusia County. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is increasing the statewide total from 172 to 193 permits.

Volusia is part of the Central Bear Harvest Zone alongside Orange, Seminole and Lake counties, with 21 permits allocated to that zone. FWC considers regulated hunting a wildlife-management tool, while opponents, including Bear Warriors United, continue efforts to limit the hunt by encouraging non-hunters to obtain permits. Last year, 52 bears were harvested statewide from 172 permits during the 23-day hunt. Applications for this year’s permits open Sept. 11 at 10 a.m., with the hunt scheduled for Dec. 5-27. Limits and regulations vary by harvest zone.
