🗳️ Alan Burton Runs for Ormond Beach Zone 1
Alan Burton, longtime Ormond Beach resident and former city director of leisure services, has officially entered the race for Zone 1 on the Ormond Beach City Commission. Burton’s name might ring a bell for locals familiar with the ReGrow the Loop initiative, which he helped launch and now hopes to expand with a new nonprofit, ReGrow America.
With a resume steeped in civic service—from leading the Friends of the Performing Arts Center to his role on the Soil & Water Conservation District—Burton sees local government as a platform for “servant leadership.” He hopes to bring a balance of experience and listening skills to the table.
His platform centers on fiscal responsibility, conservation stewardship, and closer scrutiny of developments like Avalon Park Daytona. Burton joins a three-person race with nurse Coleen McMahon and Security First Insurance president Melissa Burt DeVriese. The Zone 1 seat is being vacated by Lori Tolland, who’s now running for mayor.

📚 Transparency Push: School Board Member Rights Bill Moves Forward
A bill born from friction in Volusia County may soon impact school boards statewide. House Bill 1073 and its Senate companion aim to ensure board members—like Volusia’s Donna Brosemer—aren’t left in the dark by their own districts.
Brosemer raised red flags after she was charged for requesting district documents and found herself struggling to access key information. The new legislation, now advancing in Tallahassee, would grant school board members free and timely access to all district records (even those not classified as public), require itemized budgets, and ensure board members get legal counsel independent of district administration.
The proposed bills also ban employee non-disclosure agreements—a response to a recent controversy in which over 100 VCS employees were asked to sign NDAs. One former teacher, Shane Story, testified that he lost his job for refusing to sign.
Legislators made clear this isn’t just a Volusia problem. “If it’s happening here, it’s probably happening elsewhere,” said Rep. Alex Rizo. And judging by the bipartisan support, the push for more transparency in Florida school districts may soon become law.

🚨 U-Haul Chase Ends in Wild Flagler Beach Standoff
A high-drama police chase and standoff unfolded in Flagler Beach when two Gainesville residents led deputies on a pursuit in—of all things—a U-Haul truck.
It started with a tip about suspicious activity under the Hammock Dunes Bridges in Palm Coast. When deputies approached, the truck took off, later getting trapped on SR-A1A thanks to stop sticks and a BearCat vehicle blockade.
The standoff lasted over an hour and ended with both suspects in custody. May Ling Ip allegedly resisted arrest with vigor, attempting to flee toward the beach and even biting a sergeant. K-9 Guapo played a key role in her capture. Her partner, Jamie Allen Mays, surrendered after K-9 Mako got involved.
Ip faces several felony charges, including assault and battery on an officer, while Mays was charged with misdemeanor obstruction. Both remain in custody. No injuries were reported, and officials emphasized the use of less-lethal tools like shatterballs and aerosol spray during the operation.
Just another day in Florida? Maybe. But definitely one for the police blotter.

🔥 Tiger Bay Wildfires Burn Over 200 Acres
Wildfires ripped through over 200 acres of Tiger Bay State Forest earlier this week, but officials say the flames are now fully contained. Thanks to swift response from the Florida Forest Service, no structures were threatened, although smoke was visible from LPGA Boulevard and surrounding areas.
The fires broke out Monday afternoon—one in Wampee Strand (110 acres), and the other in Bear Island (106 acres). Investigators are still determining the cause, but severe drought conditions and fire-prone weather have clearly upped the risk.
Camron Greenlund of the Forest Service urged the public to be extra cautious when enjoying outdoor recreation and strongly discouraged outdoor burning for the time being.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, much of Volusia and Flagler counties are experiencing "severe" drought conditions. It's dry, it's dangerous, and it's a good time to swap that bonfire for a backyard barbecue (sans flames).
