🐢Volusia County's Marine Science Center has a new veterinary ultrasound system, funded entirely by the Friends of the Marine Science Center, who raised over $35,000 to make it happen. The equipment replaces an aging unit and gives veterinary staff a more precise, non-invasive way to examine sea turtles and other marine animals — evaluating soft tissue injuries, guiding treatment decisions, and tracking recovery progress. It's the kind of behind-the-scenes infrastructure that rarely makes headlines but directly determines how many animals make it back to the ocean. The Friends group raised the full amount through community donations before presenting the equipment to the county-operated facility. Well spent.

🌀Hurricane Preparedness Week runs May 3–9, and with the Atlantic season opening June 1 — just 27 days away — this is the week to actually do the things you've been meaning to do since last November. Forecasters are calling for a somewhat below-average season, but as every meteorologist in Florida will remind you, it only takes one. Here's the week's checklist distilled:

Hurricane Preparedness Week — your action checklist

Know your risk

Find out if you're in a flood-prone area or evacuation zone. Identify structural vulnerabilities in your home — mobile homes and manufactured housing are especially exposed.

Prepare now, before a storm

Assemble disaster supplies: food, water, batteries, a hand-crank radio, cash, and charged devices. Get an insurance checkup. Document your possessions. Write down key contacts by hand.

Understand the forecast

Trust the National Hurricane Center and your local NWS office. Know the difference between a watch and a warning. Deadly hazards — storm surge, flooding, tornadoes — occur well outside the forecast cone.

When a storm threatens

Cover windows, secure doors and outdoor items. Know your shelter options. Fill your gas tank or charge your vehicle. Help neighbors who may need assistance. Follow evacuation orders immediately if given.

After the storm

Return home only when officials say it's safe. Watch for downed power lines, floodwater, and heat. Run generators outdoors only, at least 20 feet from your home. Check on neighbors before pushing yourself.

🏍️The fourth annual Saddle Up for St. Jude poker run in Ormond Beach raised $126,128 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital — a record for the event, which has grown from $40,000 in its inaugural year. Organized by Sherry Fletcher in partnership with Iron Horse Saloon and law firm Rue & Ziffra, the April 4 ride drew 345 participants including Mayor Jason Leslie and Sen. Tom Wright. The funds mean families at St. Jude can focus entirely on their child's recovery — treatment, housing, and travel are covered at no cost to families. Fletcher came to the cause personally, after her sister-in-law's nephew was treated at St. Jude, and she's been building the event with a group of about 40 volunteers ever since. The check was presented at the Iron Horse on Tuesday. A record four years running.

🚧A quick commuter note: Clyde Morris Boulevard in Ormond Beach will have lane closures through Monday, May 18, for a sanitary manhole replacement between West Granada Boulevard and just south of South Forty Trail. Traffic continues in both directions, but drivers coming from South Forty Trail or Ormond in the Pines are limited to right turns only during construction. Expect delays. The road fully reopens once work is complete. Questions? Call Ormond Beach Engineering at 386-610-0550.
