🚲 Bicyclist Killed in U.S. 1 Crash

A 39-year-old bicyclist was killed Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle on North U.S. Highway 1 in Ormond Beach. Police said Edward Joseph Ambro of Clermont was traveling southbound near the 800 block when he swerved from the shoulder into the travel lane and was struck by a Chevrolet Malibu around 8:30 p.m.

The driver stopped, called 911 and remained at the scene. Ambro was pronounced dead by medical personnel. According to the preliminary investigation, speed and impairment do not appear to have contributed to the crash, and police found no evidence that the bicycle had an operable rear light. The investigation remains ongoing, and witnesses are encouraged to contact Officer Carlos Ortiz at [email protected].

🚒 Tentative Budget Boosts Fire Rescue

Volusia County’s tentative fiscal year 2026-27 budget would increase Fire Rescue funding by nearly 3%, raising the district’s overall budget from approximately $81.8 million to nearly $84 million while slightly reducing the current Fire Services millage rate.

Personnel funding would rise by more than $4 million, with additional dollars directed toward operations, equipment and long-term capital needs. The proposal includes $9.5 million for a new Fire Station 47 in the Barberville area, along with funding for a special operations truck, brush truck, breathing apparatus and protective equipment. Overall, approximately $254.6 million of the county’s projected $455.5 million in property tax revenue would support public safety. Final budget consideration is scheduled for Sept. 22 at 5:01 p.m.

🏖️ Beach Parking Limited for Labor Day Weekend

Volusia County is temporarily restricting some on-beach parking during Labor Day weekend to improve pedestrian safety in high-traffic areas. From Saturday through Monday, adjustments will affect parking near Grace K. Barck North Beach Community Park, Esther Street Beachfront Park, Marianne Clancy Park, Ed Peck Sr. Park and Dahlia Avenue Park, although vehicles can continue driving through those areas.

Parking will also be restricted directly in front of Sun Splash Park, Frank Rendon Park and Flagler Avenue Park. Officials estimate approximately 125 on-beach spaces will be affected. The county says reducing parked vehicles near busy locations improves visibility for pedestrians and motorists during the holiday crowds. Beachgoers looking for alternatives can use more than 60 off-beach parking lots offering over 2,000 spaces.
