📷Volusia County may soon revisit the question of body cameras for code enforcement officers, thanks to a bill that passed the Florida Legislature and is now awaiting the governor's signature. The issue isn't new here — the County Council discussed it back in 2024, but the conversation stalled over a thorny legal problem: code enforcement officers who record someone on private property without consent can face criminal charges, a protection that police officers don't have to worry about. The council actually asked the state to fix that gap, and the legislature appears to have listened.

The proposed law, CS/SB 504, would allow code enforcement officers to record on private property as part of their official duties, without needing to ask permission first. A companion bill, SB 506, would keep those recordings confidential when made inside private homes or other spaces where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy. Code enforcement is genuinely hazardous work — officers regularly find themselves in confrontational situations when telling property owners what they can and cannot do with their own land. The case for body cameras is both about officer safety and accountability. Daytona Beach already equips its code officers with cameras; the county has been waiting for the legal framework to catch up. If the governor signs the bills, county staff say they'll begin evaluating how to implement a program, likely as part of the fall budget discussions.

On Friday morning, Volusia County gave Vietnam veterans something that was long overdue: a proper welcome home. A new Vietnam Memorial Wall was unveiled at Veterans Memorial Plaza, 125 E. Orange Ave. near the Volusia County Courthouse on City Island in Daytona Beach. The gray granite monument, measuring 8.5 feet wide and 5 feet high, is etched with scenes from the Vietnam Memorial Wall and the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington, D.C., and carries an inscription welcoming Vietnam veterans home.

The project was nine months in the making, spearheaded by U.S. Army veteran Robert "Bob" Adkins of Ormond-by-the-Sea, a former 11-year president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Daytona Beach Chapter 1048. The chapter contributed $35,000 to make it happen. Adkins ran into obstacle after obstacle before finding a committed partner in Scott Olson, the county's Veterans Services director, who saw the monument as one of the most meaningful things the county could do for its veteran community. The ceremony drew county and state officials, including Council Chair Jeff Brower, Rep. Chase Tramont, Sen. Tom Wright, and Gen. James Hartsell of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs. It was, by any measure, a day that mattered — a community finally saying, on the record and in granite, that it sees what those veterans gave and that it is grateful.

The production is directed by Daniel Mills of Ormond-by-the-Sea, a seasoned Playhouse veteran who has helmed every spring musical there since 2022. Chelsea Conrad stars as Eliza Doolittle, with Curt Knupp as the imperious Professor Henry Higgins. The show features a full cast, live orchestra, and period-inspired staging — the full treatment for one of the most beloved musicals in the American canon. The rain in Spain, the dancing all night, the Cockney vowels, all of it.
