🔥 Burn Ban and Red Flag Warning Raise Fire Concerns
Volusia County residents are being urged to think twice before lighting anything outdoors.
A burn ban went into effect on Feb. 20 across the county, including Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach, due to elevated drought conditions and increased wildfire risk. The move follows a 227-acre brush fire in Daytona Beach that was contained on Feb. 24 — the second blaze in the area within days.
Under the ban, all outdoor burning is prohibited unless specifically authorized by the Florida Forest Service. That includes yard debris, household waste, bonfires, campfires, warming fires, and even open cooking fires, according to the Ormond Beach Fire Department.
Adding to concerns, the National Weather Service in Melbourne issued a Red Flag Warning for the Daytona area on Feb. 26. A Red Flag Warning signals critical fire weather conditions, meaning any spark could spread quickly and unpredictably.
Local officials say the temporary inconvenience is a necessary precaution to protect residents, property, and first responders. Violations may result in fines or penalties.
As dry conditions persist, authorities are asking the community to stay vigilant — and patient — until conditions improve.

✈️ Ormond Beach Cadet Heads to Capitol Hill
An Ormond Beach C.A.P. cadet is preparing for a trip to Washington, D.C.
Cadet Lt. Col. Brenden Muessig has been selected to represent the Florida Wing of the Civil Air Patrol during this year’s National Legislative Day. The annual event gives cadets an opportunity to meet with elected officials and educate them about CAP’s missions, community service efforts, and stewardship of federal funding.
Up to 10 cadets are chosen statewide to participate in the three-day visit to the nation’s capital. In addition to meetings on Capitol Hill, the delegation tours Washington landmarks and participates in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.
The experience is both an honor and a leadership milestone. National Legislative Day highlights the role young leaders play in emergency services, aerospace education, and cadet development programs across the country.
For Muessig, the trip offers a chance not only to represent Florida, but also to bring Ormond Beach into the national spotlight.

🏍️ Bike Week Rolls In — With Safety Front and Center
The rumble is back.
Daytona Beach is hosting the 85th annual Daytona Bike Week, drawing hundreds of thousands of riders and visitors to the area. For local businesses, it’s the busiest time of year.
Carol’s Cat House owner Carol Boprie-Daniel designed a special Bike Week shirt that’s already flying off the shelves. At Main Street Tattoo, owner Bobby Guidotti says it’s all hands on deck as customers line up for fresh ink.
But amid the festivities, safety is a major focus. Dr. Jennifer Chan of Halifax Health reported that last year’s event resulted in 120 trauma activations, 114 admissions, and three deaths — with helmet use playing a critical role in injury severity.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Daytona Beach Police Department and the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, have increased patrols in high-traffic areas. AAA is also activating its free “Tow To Go” service for the first time during Bike Week, offering safe rides within a 10-mile radius.
Rain or shine, riders are embracing the tradition. Officials simply hope everyone enjoys the ride — and makes it home safely.
