🍽️ Ceviche28 Closes Its Doors in Ormond Beach
Fans of Peruvian cuisine in Ormond Beach were met with surprising news Sunday, June 7, as Ceviche28 announced it is closing for good.
Peter Nevarez, who co-owned the restaurant with his father, Pedro, said the decision was driven by lower-than-expected business volume combined with rising food costs and overhead expenses. The Nevarez family had transitioned the location to Peruvian fare in August of last year, following their previous concept, Frida’s, at the same address. Despite strong reviews and loyal customers, they ultimately determined the concept was not financially sustainable.
The family will now focus more attention on their other ventures, including Agave Fresh Mex in Towne Square Plaza, as well as Ay Jalisco! locations in The Villages, Clermont and Sebastian. They are encouraging Ceviche28 patrons to visit them at Agave Fresh Mex. At this time, there are no announced plans for the former restaurant space.

✈️ Airport Manager Appointment Sparks Debate
A recent Facebook post on the Ormond Beach Citizens: Protect Ormond Beach page has ignited discussion surrounding the city’s new airport manager, Izzy Bonilla.
According to the post, Bonilla was terminated in 2017 from his role as Director of General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee following an investigation into the disclosure of privileged information tied to a request for proposal process. The matter involved a $250,000 contract awarded to Hanson Professional Services and centered on a site visit arranged prior to the RFP’s public release.
Supporters point to Bonilla’s extensive aviation résumé, which includes leadership roles in Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale and Mobile, as well as executive positions with HI-Lite Airfield Solutions and AvPorts, along with advanced degrees from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The post also references a June 9 City Commission item potentially awarding a contract to Hi-Lite Airfield for airport markings. It notes Bonilla was not employed by the city or Hi-Lite at the time that contract was entered in 2025. Community members say they will continue monitoring airport operations and development projects.
⚖️ Hearing Set in Fatal Dunlawton Tollbooth Crash
Prosecutors are expected to ask a judge June 9 to keep 35-year-old Deanna Harrell jailed without bond in connection with a deadly tollbooth crash in Daytona Beach Shores.
Harrell was arrested after the June 1 crash that killed Tammie Jo Baker, a Daytona Beach toll attendant who had just reported for work moments before the incident. Harrell faces charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter, both second-degree felonies punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Harrell’s pickup truck crashed into a tollbooth around 12:38 p.m., then continued into the surf before coming to a stop. Court documents state she admitted to drinking alcohol prior to the crash and described having a “buzz.” Witnesses had also reported erratic driving before the collision.
Harrell is scheduled to appear today before Circuit Judge Leah Case at the S. James Foxman Justice Center.
