🏪 Circle K Outdoor Sales Denied by Ormond Beach Planning Board

The Ormond Beach Planning Board has recommended the City Commission deny a special exception that would allow outdoor merchandise sales at a future Circle K gas station on South Nova Road. While the station itself received site plan approval last year, the request to display items like propane tanks, ice machines, and seasonal merchandise outside hit a wall with board members concerned about neighborhood impact.

Central Park residents voiced strong opposition at the January 15 meeting, citing worries about increased theft, additional traffic, and safety concerns. Fourteen-year-old Zoe Fernandez noted the station would sit less than 300 feet from her home, raising health concerns for the 11 children in her neighborhood. Resident Amber Bobak, who previously appealed the site plan, argued outdoor sales would create "additional safety and nuisance impacts closer to existing homes."

Despite Circle K's engineer stating their goal is to be a "good neighbor," the Planning Board voted 5-0 to deny the request. The decision heads to the City Commission on February 17.

🕊️ MLK Day Celebrations Across Central Florida This Weekend

Communities throughout Central Florida will commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy with parades, film screenings, and service events spanning the holiday weekend.

In Flagler County, Bunnell kicks off festivities Saturday at noon with a parade at the G.W. Carver Center.

Volusia County offers a packed schedule across multiple cities. New Smyrna Beach will screen "The Six Triple Eight," a film about the U.S. Army's only predominantly Black, all-female battalion from World War II, on Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Alonzo "Babe" Community Center. Monday's MLK Day activities include a breakfast at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church at 7:45 a.m., followed by a community march at 9 a.m. starting from the Mary Harrell Black History Museum.

Daytona Beach adds its own tribute with worship services Sunday at Masters Domain Church of God, plus a breakfast and community march Monday morning at the Charles W. Cherry Sr., Cultural and Educational Center.

🥩 Local Butcher Breaks Down Record-High Beef Prices

If your grocery bill has felt heavier lately, you're not imagining things. Brian Gaffka, third-generation owner of Gaff's Quality Meat in Port Orange and DeLand, is explaining why beef prices have reached historic highs.

According to Gaffka, ranchers reducing their herds over recent years has created a beef shortage affecting American consumers. The supply constraints have pushed prices to record levels, impacting both retailers and shoppers throughout the region.

There's a silver lining on the horizon, though. Gaffka expressed optimism that beef prices should stabilize as the industry gets a better handle on herd management. He anticipates consumers will see some relief in the coming year as supply issues begin to ease.

For now, meat lovers may need to adjust their budgets or consider alternative proteins while the market works toward equilibrium.

✈️ Daytona Beach Airport Hits 28-Year Passenger Record

Daytona Beach International Airport closed 2025 with its highest passenger traffic since 1997, marking a significant milestone for the region's connectivity and economic impact.

Preliminary data shows 772,170 passengers traveled through DAB in 2025, a 1% increase over 2024. More impressively, overall capacity jumped 20% year-over-year as airlines expanded service to the area.

The December return of JetBlue Airways proved particularly impactful, with daily nonstop flights to New York City and Boston bringing more than 10,600 passengers in that month alone. Breeze Airways also expanded its DAB presence throughout 2025, adding four nonstop routes to Providence, Hartford, Raleigh/Durham, and Akron/Canton.

"Every new flight at DAB adds to greater business, tourism, and family connections," said Cyrus Callum, Volusia County Aviation and Economic Resources director. The airport's economic footprint is substantial, with a 2023 study measuring DAB's annual impact at $3.2 billion.

With 11 year-round nonstop routes now available across multiple carriers, the airport continues strengthening its role as the region's gateway to the world.
