📚 Reading, Safety, and Smiles at Tomoka Elementary
Outreach Officer M. Pedevillano brought stories and safety together during Literacy Week with Volusia County Schools and Tomoka Elementary. The Ormond Beach Police Department is blending books with community trust, emphasizing how literacy helps kids stay safe by understanding instructions—especially in emergencies.
The visit not only promoted reading, but also reinforced positive relationships between students and law enforcement. The department highlighted how important it is for children to feel supported and informed. Whether navigating books or life, reading is the key.
Tomoka Elementary’s warm welcome capped off a meaningful week where safety and storytelling walked hand in hand. Thank you, Tomoka, for turning the page toward a safer, smarter future.

🏈 Chaos on the Field: Youth Football Game Turns Violent
From literacy to literal scuffles, things turned ugly at an Ormond Beach sports park when a youth football game between two teams of 15-year-olds spiraled into a brawl. According to police, a referee’s call set off tensions that escalated into a multi-person fight, with even bystanders getting involved.
One juvenile not even on the teams reportedly threatened a coach, while a man trying to walk players back to their parents was attacked by several teens. He declined to press charges, though he was visibly injured. Police also received a report of a coach allegedly punching a player, but no victim came forward and the claim remains uncorroborated.
Though no charges have been filed yet, the police continue investigating the chaotic scene. It's a reminder that sportsmanship sometimes needs more coaching than the game itself.

❄️ Fern Farmers Freeze, But Stay Focused
Up in Seville, Volusia’s fern farmers are facing a chill of a different kind. Freezing temperatures have blanketed the region, just as FernTrust Incorporated hits peak season ahead of Valentine’s Day. But fear not—farmers here know a trick or two.
Using controlled irrigation to intentionally freeze the plants (yes, really), they’re protecting crops by leveraging the science of exothermic reactions. It’s a delicate dance of diesel, water, and hope.
Despite some delays in shipping, Executive VP David Register says they’re prepared and working around the clock to keep the greenery on track. With experience and grit, Volusia’s farmers are proving they can weather any storm—even an icy one.

🐬 Marineland Saved: A Historic Ocean Gem Gets New Life
In perhaps the most heartwarming story of the week, Marineland Dolphin Adventure has been rescued from potential closure following the bankruptcy of its parent company. Thanks to a determined former manager, Felicia Cook, and a Clay County couple, the historic oceanarium now has a new lease on life.
The judge overseeing the case recognized that Marineland wasn’t just a piece of real estate—it’s a cultural and educational treasure. The new leadership team plans to revamp the park with a focus on conservation, research, and community outreach.
Trainer Parker Bryant, who has worked with Marineland’s dolphins since 2018, called the court decision a “joyous moment.” Programs will continue, animals will stay, and yes—Betty the 57-year-old dolphin is still sassy as ever.
With plans to launch new interactive programs and restore Marineland’s reputation, the new team is diving headfirst into a bright future.

🏀 Four-Time Champs: Mainland Dominates the Court Again
Meanwhile, back in the win column, the Mainland Buccaneers boys basketball team clinched their fourth straight Five Star Conference title with a 76-71 win over Atlantic. The game was a back-and-forth thriller, but five Bucs players scored in double digits to lock down the victory.
Team captain Beegie Gordon led with 15 points, supported by a deep roster that’s been grinding through a tough tournament stretch. Coach Joe Giddens credits their success to mental toughness, teamwork, and some timely free throws—though he admits they missed a few.
Now sitting at 21-2, the Bucs are the top seed in District 4-6A and will face their next playoff challenge on Feb. 4. With a deep bench and high morale, Mainland is looking to turn this hot streak into postseason glory.

Answer to yesterday’s meme…
The fully “by-the-book” answer (especially in American English and in formal writing) is:
✅ D) “The team is having its lunch.”
Why:
“Team” is a collective noun (one group). In American English it’s usually treated as singular, so it takes a singular verb (is) and a singular pronoun (its).
team → is / its
