🐶 Volusia County Raises the Bar on Dangerous Dog Ownership
In a bold move ahead of state lawmakers, the Volusia County Council adopted a stricter ordinance requiring owners of dogs classified as dangerous to carry a minimum of $500,000 in liability insurance—five times the amount proposed at the state level. This ordinance applies to unincorporated areas, Pierson, and Oak Hill, where Volusia County Animal Services holds jurisdiction.
A dog can be deemed dangerous based on aggressive behavior by animal services—regardless of breed—and owners must meet strict registration and confinement conditions. If they fail to comply, they face $500 fines per violation, possible impoundment, and even humane euthanasia of the animal under legal guidelines.
The ordinance is currently being processed by the Florida Department of State and will take effect in the coming weeks.

🎨 Sandcrab Artists Make Waves at OMAM
The walls of the Ormond Memorial Art Museum are bursting with creativity thanks to the annual Tradewinds student art show, featuring over 130 works by 109 Seabreeze High School students. The exhibition, which began in 1964, has grown into Volusia County’s first juried student art festival and is still going strong.
This year’s winners included Madison Heard for her 3D piece “Beastly Puzzle” and Caitlyn Cavalluzzo for her 2D work “Up Close and Personal.” At the May 8 opening, families, students, and art lovers gathered to celebrate the young artists.
“I'm really grateful for each of my students who have created such amazing artwork this year,” said Seabreeze teacher Christine Colby.
The exhibit is a reminder of the thriving arts scene cultivated right here at home—starting in the classroom.

🚨 Bottled Water Incident Raises Eyebrows in Ormond
A routine stop at a local car wash turned unsettling for one 36-year-old woman, who accepted a bottle of water and a powdered drink packet from a man by the vacuums. After consuming it, she grew alarmed when the man asked if she was “coming down yet.”
The woman fled and called police, who noted she was highly paranoid and distracted. Officers tested the bottle, which returned positive for methamphetamines. The woman wasn’t sure if the bottle was already opened and has requested charges be filed if the suspect is found.
A bizarre reminder: always be cautious when accepting items from strangers—even if they’re dressed in polos and seem polite.

🍼 Publix Recalls GreenWise Baby Food for Lead Risk
Publix has issued a voluntary recall for its GreenWise Pear, Kiwi, Spinach & Pea Baby Food (4 oz.), citing elevated lead levels detected during routine testing. The affected pouches, produced by Bowman Andros LLC, carry GTIN number 41415-00901 and a “Best If” date of 11/01/2025.
Though no illnesses have been reported, the CDC warns that even low levels of lead exposure can impact children's development and learning.
Concerned consumers should stop using the product immediately and may return it to any Publix for a full refund. Questions? Contact Publix Customer Care at 800-242-1227 or visit publix.com.
This is the second such recall in recent weeks, following Target’s withdrawal of its own store-brand baby food for similar concerns.

While big-name corporations are pouring millions into artificial intelligence, many local businesses are being left behind—not because they lack interest, but because they lack a practical roadmap to get started.
In my own work transforming our newsletter operations with AI, the shift has been remarkable. Tasks that used to take hours now take minutes. Insights that once required outside consultants are now just a few prompts away.
That’s why I’m considering launching a community hub designed specifically for local business owners and individuals. The goal? To demystify AI, share step-by-step how-tos, and connect you with others using these tools successfully in real-world settings.
Before building this, I want to hear directly from you. What’s standing in your way? Is it the learning curve? The cost? Not knowing how it fits into your business?
Take 3 minutes to complete our short survey. You’ll help shape the direction of this resource—and as a thank you, survey participants will receive early access and exclusive first-month content free of charge.
