🐶 Dogs Catch Waves at Hang 8 Surfing Extravaganza
It wasn’t just humans riding the waves in Daytona Beach this weekend.
The Hang 8 Dog Surfing Extravaganza brought dogs and their owners to a 1.7-mile dog-friendly stretch of beach for a competition that mixed surfing, fundraising and community spirit. The beach section, which opened in December, joins the existing dog beach in Ormond Beach and has quickly become a favorite among local pet owners.
Dogs of all experience levels — from first-timers to seasoned surfers — showed off their balance and bravery on the boards. Owners shared tips on steadying their pups as they glided across the water.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Volusia County Animal Services, Hang 8 and Daytona Dog Beach Inc., which helps maintain the county’s dog-friendly beaches.
With volunteers, lifeguards and even a mobile vet clinic on site, the event highlighted both fun and responsible pet ownership — all while supporting local animal welfare groups.

🎓 Volusia Senior Named Spectrum News 13 Scholar
Grace Meyers has balanced dual enrollment classes, ranch responsibilities and more than 100 volunteer hours — and now she’s being recognized for it.
The Volusia Online Learning senior has been named a Spectrum News 13 High School Scholar, earning a $1,000 scholarship to support her college education.
Meyers splits her time between Ormond Beach and Jacksonville, caring for horses while completing coursework online. This summer, she’ll begin studying business management at University of North Florida.
Her long-term goal is deeply personal: to create a foundation that uses horses and other animals as therapy for people with dementia and special needs. Inspired in part by her grandmother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Meyers has volunteered extensively in memory care facilities.
School counselor Victoria Hamlin described her as driven, compassionate and community-minded — traits that have defined her high school journey and will likely shape what comes next.

🚨 Fatal Shooting Under Investigation at Derbyshire Park
Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday at Derbyshire Park.
According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, an adult man and woman were at the park when they were approached by an unknown male. Authorities say a disagreement escalated, and the unknown individual allegedly displayed a firearm.
Police reported that the male victim then retrieved his own firearm and told the individual to leave. As the person walked away, investigators say he turned and fired multiple rounds. The male victim returned fire.
The male and female victims drove themselves to a hospital for treatment. Officers later found the other male involved at the park, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation remains active, and additional details have not yet been released.
