🛍️ Dunn’s Attic Lands in Southern Living

There’s local love — and then there’s national recognition. This week, Dunn’s Attic in Ormond Beach earned a spotlight in Southern Living, a nod that owner Wes Dunn calls both an honor and a validation.

The Feb. 26 feature praised the 12,000-square-foot consignment store for its carefully curated vintage finds, loyal following and perhaps most famously, its $1 mimosas. For Dunn, the formula is simple: make shopping feel like an experience again.

“People will spend hours in the store,” Dunn said, pointing to the intentional blending of retail and hospitality. Connected to Rosie's Cafe, an 80-seat eatery, the Granada Boulevard destination offers customers a place to browse, sip and stay awhile.

With more than 4,800 consigners and an average of 2,000 items sold each month — including online — the business has grown steadily over 13 years. In that time, nearly $4 million has been paid out to consigners.

Dunn credits optimism and adaptability for that success. Expanding into online sales and even acquiring a firearms consignment license are examples of staying nimble in a shifting retail landscape.

And about those mimosas? The store goes through roughly 3,000 bottles of champagne a year. In North Central Florida, that’s a toast-worthy statistic.

For Dunn, the Southern Living feature is simply confirmation that small-business hospitality still resonates.

🚓 Deputy’s Quick Action Saves a Life

In late December, former Ormond Beach City Commissioner Susan Persis was enjoying dinner at Alexander’s when a piece of food became lodged in her throat. Unable to breathe or cough it up, she stood in distress — and that’s when an off-duty deputy stepped in.

Flagler County Sheriff's Office Deputy Joe Oliva Jr. recognized the signs immediately. Without hesitation, he performed the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the obstruction and restoring Persis’ breathing.

“They always say we’re never really off duty,” Oliva said.

For Persis, it was nothing short of lifesaving. “If he hadn’t been there, I don’t know what would have happened,” she said, later making it a point to publicly express her gratitude.

Oliva, a regular at the restaurant where his family works, initially didn’t report the incident. He maintains that anyone wearing a badge would have done the same. Still, he is slated to receive a life-saving award from the sheriff’s office later this year — his second, following a 2023 rescue involving a vehicle fire.

According to the National Safety Council, choking remains the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury death in the U.S., underscoring how critical quick action can be.

For the Persis family, the outcome was simple: relief and deep gratitude.

🏍️ Fatal Crash on Ormond’s Loop

A 57-year-old Wisconsin woman died March 5 after a motorcycle crash at High Bridge Road and Walter Boardman Lane, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Authorities report the motorcycle’s 64-year-old driver failed to negotiate a curve, entering the eastbound path of a truck hauling a trailer. The motorcycle collided with the trailer, ejecting both riders. Neither was wearing a helmet.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, also from Wisconsin, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The 65-year-old Palm Coast man driving the truck was uninjured and reportedly unaware at first that the motorcycle had struck his trailer.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly road conditions can turn dangerous — particularly along winding stretches like Ormond’s Loop.

As investigations continue, the community reflects on a life lost and the importance of roadway awareness and safety precautions.
