🚲 E-Bike Rules Remain in Focus Across Volusia

As more local governments explore regulations for e-bikes and other micromobility devices, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood is emphasizing education and existing Florida law before additional local rules are enforced. Under current state law, e-bikes are classified into three categories, with motors limited to 750 watts and top assisted speeds ranging up to 28 mph. Riders of Class 3 e-bikes must be at least 16 years old and possess the appropriate driver's license, while lower-class e-bikes are generally regulated much like traditional bicycles. Chitwood said education is the key priority, noting the Sheriff's Office and Volusia County Schools are developing a safety program requiring students who ride e-bikes to campus to complete training and register their bikes with parental approval. As communities continue evaluating local ordinances, officials expect public safety and rider education to remain at the center of the conversation.

Volusia County has approved the purchase of a 14-acre riverfront property adjacent to Highbridge Park in Ormond Beach, creating opportunities to expand one of the area's busiest recreational destinations. Funded through county Park Impact Fees, the acquisition will help address long-standing parking shortages while improving public access to the Halifax River. Beyond the additional space, the property strengthens a growing network of protected conservation lands, connecting with the broader 6,000-acre corridor and supporting the long-term vision for North Peninsula State Park. The environmentally sensitive parcel also protects valuable shoreline habitat, enhances flood resilience and preserves important wildlife resources, ensuring future generations can continue enjoying this scenic stretch of the Halifax River.
