🩸 EMS Prepares to Bring Blood Transfusions to the Field
Volusia County Emergency Medical Services is preparing to launch a prehospital whole-blood program designed to give trauma patients critical treatment sooner. Crews are undergoing simulation-based training to identify eligible patients, prepare blood products and administer transfusions before arriving at the hospital. The program, expected to roll out in the coming weeks, could provide another lifesaving option for patients experiencing significant blood loss, as earlier access to blood may improve outcomes in certain trauma cases. The County Council approved agreements with Halifax Health and OneBlood earlier this year, with Halifax Health assisting with blood handling and logistics and OneBlood supplying the blood products.

🥐 Cuban Bakery Brings a Taste of Home to Ormond Beach
Mimi’s Cuban Bakery has opened at 1220 Hand Ave., bringing handmade pastelitos, croquetas, papas rellenas, Cuban bread, sandwiches, desserts and coffee to Ormond Beach. Owners Sergio Hevia and Tammy Bowen began selling pastries at local farmers markets, where frequent sellouts convinced them to make the leap into a permanent storefront. The response hasn’t slowed down: the couple says the bakery has sold out daily since opening. Beyond the food, Hevia and Bowen hope Mimi’s becomes a neighborhood gathering place, complete with a room for dominoes, coffee and conversation. For Hevia, whose father immigrated from Cuba and opened a Miami restaurant, the bakery also carries on a family tradition.

🏁 Racing Legends Roll Into One Daytona
Rain couldn’t put the brakes on the Icons of Motorsports Car Show at One Daytona’s Victory Circle. Held ahead of the Coke Zero Sugar 400, the event showcased racing machines representing generations of motorsports history. Among the highlights was Frank Pelkey’s period-correct 4D vintage NASCAR modified, built as a tribute to longtime short-track racer Dale Merz, along with Russ Stoiber’s 1975 ISMA Corvette recreation connected to Florida racing legend John Greenwood. The show wasn’t only about looking backward, however. Eight-year-old NASCAR Youth Series driver Wilder Eaves stopped by on his way to compete in Alabama, offering a fitting reminder that racing’s next generation is already getting behind the wheel.
