🎨 Family Creativity Takes Center Stage at OMAM

Community connections and creativity were on full display this month as the Ormond Memorial Art Museum recognized the Jaramillo family as its featured family from June’s Free Family Art Night. Nieve Jaramillo and her daughter Laura, who moved from Colombia and have called Ormond Beach home for the past six years, were selected following the June 5 event.

For Laura, art is much more than a hobby. She enjoys drawing, painting, and experimenting with new projects both at school and at home. She shared that visits to the museum help spark new ideas and encourage her creativity. Programs like Family Art Night provide families with opportunities to explore artistic expression together while building relationships within the community.

The popular monthly event continues to attract participants of all ages by offering free art supplies and a welcoming environment for beginners and experienced artists alike. The next Family Art Night is scheduled for July 3 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., continuing OMAM’s mission of making art accessible and engaging for local families.

🗳️ Three City Races Head to August Primary

Ormond Beach voters will have several important decisions to make this summer as three City Commission contests advance to the August primary election. Because the mayoral race and the races for Zones 1 and 4 each feature three or more candidates, voters will head to the polls on Aug. 18. Should no candidate secure more than 50% of the vote plus one, the top two finishers will advance to a November runoff.

The mayoral contest features incumbent Jason Leslie, current Deputy Mayor Lori Tolland, Navy veteran Damien Curry, and former elected board member George Doran. Meanwhile, the open Zone 1 seat has attracted candidates Coleen McMahon, Melissa Burt DeVriese, and Alan Burton. In Zone 4, incumbent Harold Briley faces challengers Barry du Moulin and Amber Bobak.

Two additional races, Zones 2 and 3, will be decided during the November general election because each has only two candidates. Together, these contests represent one of the most active local election cycles Ormond Beach has seen in recent years.

🌡️ Libraries Offer Cool Relief During Heat Wave

With temperatures climbing into the upper 80s and 90s and heat index values potentially exceeding 100 degrees, Volusia County officials are reminding residents to take precautions against extreme heat. One resource available to everyone is the county library system, which is opening its air-conditioned facilities as comfortable spaces where residents can escape the hottest parts of the day.

County-operated libraries are welcoming visitors during regular business hours, regardless of whether they hold a library card. Officials emphasize that staying cool, hydrated, and informed can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Residents are encouraged to drink water regularly, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and wear lightweight clothing when spending time outside. The county is also asking people to check on vulnerable neighbors, including older adults, children, and individuals with underlying health conditions. Pet owners should be especially mindful of hot pavement and ensure animals have access to shade and fresh water. As summer temperatures continue to rise, these simple precautions can make a meaningful difference.

Residents seeking relief from the heat can find library locations and operating hours at www.volusialibrary.org.
