🌊 Federal Review Could Strengthen Volusia's Coastline

Volusia County has reached an important milestone in its long-term effort to protect its coastline from storms and erosion. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct a Federal Interest Determination, a preliminary review that will evaluate coastal risks, impacts to homes and infrastructure, and whether the county qualifies for a larger federal partnership. If the review is favorable, it could lead to a comprehensive feasibility study and eventually a federally authorized coastal storm risk management project. County leaders note that Volusia is one of only two counties on Florida's Atlantic coast without an authorized federal coastal protection project, making this evaluation a significant step toward improving shoreline resilience for future generations.

🚧 Clyde Morris Improvements Fast-Tracked

Construction on a long-awaited $56 million improvement project for Clyde Morris Boulevard will begin two years earlier than originally planned. Announced during a visit to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the project will enhance the three-mile corridor between Mason Avenue and Beville Road with wider sidewalks, a shared-use path, upgraded traffic signals, raised medians and a new pedestrian tunnel near the university. State leaders also highlighted Embry-Riddle's growing role in advancing research on Advanced Air Mobility and autonomous transportation technologies. Construction is expected to begin this fall and continue in phases through 2029, bringing both safety improvements and long-term transportation benefits to one of Volusia County's busiest corridors.

🩺 B-CU Creates Early Nursing Pathway for High School Students

Bethune-Cookman University is opening the door for aspiring nurses even earlier with a new dual enrollment nursing program scheduled to launch in fall 2027. The initiative will allow up to 10 eligible high school juniors from Volusia, Flagler, Putnam and St. Johns counties to begin earning college nursing credits before graduation through B-CU Global. After high school, students can transition directly into clinical coursework and complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in just three years. Aside from textbooks, tuition will be covered, making the program an affordable pathway into one of Florida's most in-demand professions. 🏨 Tourism Industry Faces Challenges, But Bright Spots Remain

Volusia County's hospitality industry continues to experience mixed results as bed tax collections and hotel occupancy declined slightly in May compared with a year earlier. A smaller turnout at Welcome to Rockville contributed to the decrease, while broader tourism trends—including reduced international travel and the upcoming loss of JetBlue's nonstop service to Boston and New York—present additional challenges. Even so, there are reasons for optimism. Two new oceanfront hotels are expected to open in the coming months, adding new accommodations and supporting future visitor growth. Local business leaders also continue advocating for initiatives that enhance the beach experience and strengthen Volusia County's appeal as a year-round destination.

Are There Too Many Surveillance Cameras? (Poll Results)


The poll responses reveal a sharply divided view of Flock surveillance cameras, with privacy and government overreach emerging as the most common concerns. Several respondents objected to law enforcement or private companies being able to track vehicles and movements, questioning the level of oversight, who has access to the information, and whether such surveillance is appropriate in a free society.
