The History of Mother's Day

Mother's Day as Americans know it today traces its roots to the early twentieth century, though honoring mothers stretches back far longer in human history. Ancient Greeks and Romans held spring festivals celebrating mother goddesses, and the British tradition of "Mothering Sunday" — observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent — gave workers a day to return home and visit their mothers.

The modern American holiday, however, owes its existence almost entirely to one determined woman: Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia. After her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died in 1905, Anna launched a passionate campaign to create a national day honoring mothers. Ann had herself organized "Mothers' Day Work Clubs" during the Civil War to care for wounded soldiers on both sides of the conflict, and her daughter believed her selfless spirit deserved lasting recognition.

In 1908, Anna held the first official Mother's Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton. She lobbied tirelessly — writing letters to politicians, businessmen, and clergy — until President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation in 1914 making the second Sunday in May a national holiday.

Yet the story takes a bittersweet turn. Jarvis grew deeply dismayed as florists, greeting card companies, and candy makers quickly commercialized her creation. She spent her later years actively protesting the holiday she had worked so hard to establish, calling it a "Hallmark holiday" that had betrayed its original spirit of heartfelt, personal tribute.

Today, Mother's Day is one of the most widely observed holidays in the United States and is celebrated in some form in countries across the globe — a testament to the universal human impulse to honor the women who raised us.

📋Volusia County voters will have five proposed charter amendments on the November ballot, following the Charter Review Commission's adoption of its final report in April. The County Council's role at this stage is limited to holding public hearings — the amendments themselves are fixed and will go to voters as written. Three hearings are scheduled: May 19, June 2, and June 16 at the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center in DeLand. The full report is at volusia.org/chartercommission.

The five proposed charter amendments

  • Council structure & term limits: Establishes five district members and two at-large members, an annually elected chair chosen from within the council, and stricter term limits.

  • Expense reimbursements: Removes charter restrictions on how council members are reimbursed for work-related travel expenses, both in-county and out-of-county.

  • Constitutional offices update: Brings the charter into alignment with Florida's 2018 Constitutional Amendment 10, which affected various county constitutional offices.

  • Personnel policies: Removes detailed personnel system rules from the charter and shifts that authority to the County Council, to be set by ordinance.

  • Conservation lands registry: Creates a protected registry of conservation properties that cannot be sold or transferred without a majority-plus-one council vote, with exceptions for eminent domain and county use.

The conservation lands amendment is particularly worth noting given last week's unanimous River Bend Ranch acquisition — a formal registry with elevated voting thresholds would give Volusia Forever properties an additional layer of protection against future councils making different choices. Public hearings begin May 19 at 4 p.m. in DeLand.

🏅Volusia County EMS has received a Gold Award from the American Heart Association through its Mission:Lifeline program — the association's top national recognition for emergency cardiac care. The award reflects how well EMS teams identify and begin treatment for severe heart attacks and strokes in the field, and how effectively they coordinate with hospitals to improve patient outcomes. Volusia EMS earned Bronze in 2024, Silver in 2025, and Gold in 2026 — three consecutive years of improvement at the highest-stakes end of emergency medicine. For anyone who has ever called 911 for a cardiac emergency in this county, this is what that progression means in practice: faster recognition, better coordination, and more lives with a fighting chance. Well earned.
