AdventHealth is offering free sports physicals for all middle and high school students enrolled in Volusia County public schools this spring. The exams cover the standard physical required before participating in athletics, band, JROTC, and other extracurricular activities — and they come with a free electrocardiogram, a quick test that checks the electrical activity of the heart. That last part matters more than it might sound. Last year, AdventHealth screened nearly 1,100 Volusia County students and identified 17 who needed follow-up care, including several who required immediate medical attention. Among them was Matanzas High School basketball player Jamel Guerrero, whose screening revealed a rare heart condition. He had surgery. This winter, he came back and scored 20 points in his first game. The physicals are free, the peace of mind is priceless, and the appointments go fast — so don't wait for August.
"A sports physical may seem routine, but it's an important moment to check on a young person's health and catch concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed."— Erik Nason, AdventHealth director of strategic partnership operations
The Volusia County event runs at Daytona International Speedway over four days: Wednesday, April 8 through Friday, April 10 from 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is open now at events.blackthorn.io — search for the AdventHealth sports physicals event or follow the link in our source below.

The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce's Women2Women luncheon had a very good March 13th. The biannual networking event for professional women, held this time at Oceanside Country Club, raised over $3,700 for the Rob Ridder Scholarship — the most ever generated through ticket sales in the event's history. The scholarship, established in 2014, supports local high school seniors whose parents or guardians are Chamber members and who plan to attend college in the fall. Several $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year. Volusia County Schools Superintendent Carmen Balgobin was the guest speaker, and AdventHealth served as the presenting sponsor. The Women2Women luncheon runs twice a year; the fall edition will be your next opportunity to attend.

And now the story that made for an anxious Monday and Tuesday for a lot of Volusia County families. A series of emailed bomb and shooting threats targeted five county schools over two days — New Smyrna Beach High School, Atlantic High School in Port Orange, Deltona High School, DeLand High School, and Ormond Beach Middle School. Officials traced the threats to an international VPN account, consistent with what's become a familiar and infuriating pattern: coordinated swatting attempts, almost certainly originating overseas, designed purely to cause disruption and fear with no actual intent behind them.
In each case, school resource deputies swept the campuses, a bomb-detection K-9 unit was placed on standby, and the district's Threat Assessment Unit monitored in real time. Every school remained open. No evacuations were necessary. No one was harmed. Officials were clear with parents: the threats were determined to be non-credible. That said, "non-credible" doesn't mean "not worth taking seriously," and the response from law enforcement and school staff was swift and thorough. In a week that has already seen legitimate safety concerns at the district level, it's at least reassuring to see the protocols working as designed.
