🥡 Frozen Fried Rice Recall Impacts Millions of Pounds

Consumers across the U.S. — and some in Canada — are being urged to check their freezers following a sizeable recall from Ajinomoto Foods North America. The company is recalling approximately 3.37 million pounds of frozen, not-ready-to-eat chicken fried rice products due to possible contamination with foreign material, specifically glass.

According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the affected products were produced between September 8 and November 17, 2025. Items include “AJINOMOTO YAKITORI CHICKEN WITH JAPANESE-STYLE FRIED RICE,” exported to Canada, and “TRADER JOE’S Chicken Fried Rice,” distributed to Trader Joe's stores nationwide. All recalled packages bear establishment number P-18356 inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The issue surfaced after four consumer complaints reported glass in the product. Fortunately, no confirmed injuries have been reported to date. Still, the United States Department of Agriculture advises consumers not to eat the products and to either discard them or return them to the place of purchase.

Retailers are being notified, and recall effectiveness checks are underway. If you have questions, Ajinomoto’s consumer affairs team and the USDA hotline are available to help.

🏍️ Safety First as Bike Week Roars into Daytona Beach

From food safety to road safety, attention now shifts to Florida’s east coast, where engines are rumbling and helmets are on. Bike Week is officially underway in Daytona Beach, drawing hundreds of thousands of riders through March 8.

With the influx comes heightened vigilance. Mike Chitwood, sheriff of Volusia County, says fatalities and serious injuries historically increase when large numbers of motorcycles converge in the area. In response, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies are coordinating efforts to target DUIs, speeding, and aggressive driving.

Longtime riders like Frank Perkins describe the event as a tradition — but acknowledge the importance of staying alert. Authorities agree: proactive, defensive riding can make all the difference.

To further reduce impaired driving risks, AAA is activating its Tow to Go program during the event. The service provides free rides — for both the rider and their motorcycle — within a 10-mile radius, available to members and non-members alike.

The message this year is simple: enjoy the sights and sounds, but take your time and make smart choices.

🌊 New Rip Current Simulator Aims to Save Lives

Continuing the theme of prevention, Volusia County is taking ocean safety education to a new level — quite literally — with a hands-on learning tool designed to simulate one of the beach’s most dangerous hazards.

This week, Volusia County Beach Safety unveiled a rip current simulator at the Daytona State College Aquatic Center. The system recreates the force and flow of a rip current in a controlled pool environment, allowing participants to safely experience what it feels like — and, more importantly, how to respond.

During demonstrations, staff emphasized remaining calm, conserving energy, and following proper escape techniques. The simulator will soon be incorporated into community education classes aimed at reducing panic-driven decisions and strengthening water safety awareness among residents and visitors alike.

Funding for the simulator will be reimbursed through a grant from the Florida Department of Children and Families, reinforcing the county’s investment in proactive safety initiatives.

As beach season approaches, officials hope that realistic preparation today will translate into fewer emergencies tomorrow.
