⛽ Florida Gas Prices Drop Ahead of July 4th Travel

Good news for holiday travelers: Florida gas prices are trending lower just ahead of the Independence Day weekend. According to AAA, the statewide average dipped to as low as $3.61 per gallon before settling at $3.68 on Tuesday, the lowest levels seen since March.

Locally, Flagler County averaged $3.67 per gallon while Volusia County came in at $3.69. Despite the recent decline, drivers are still paying more than they did a year ago, when Florida's average price was $3.11 per gallon.

AAA says global events continue to influence fuel prices, particularly developments involving oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. For now, lower prices are providing welcome relief for Floridians preparing for summer road trips.

🎓 Volusia Schools Trim Deficit but Face Ongoing Challenges

Volusia County Schools has reduced its projected budget deficit for the 2026-27 school year to $6.3 million, a significant improvement from this year's $14.8 million shortfall. District leaders credit strategic staffing reductions and cost-saving measures, but caution that financial pressures remain.

Declining enrollment continues to reduce district revenue while funding directed to charter schools and scholarship programs continues to rise. District officials estimate that more than 21% of education funding now flows to those alternatives, compared to about 5% just a few years ago.

School Board members also discussed the possibility of future school closures as enrollment declines persist. No decisions have been made, but community discussions and facility evaluations are expected later this year.

⚖️ Ormond Counselor Accused in $219K Medicaid Fraud Scheme

An Ormond Beach mental health counselor is facing multiple felony charges after state investigators alleged she fraudulently billed Medicaid for more than $219,000 in services that were never provided.

According to court records, investigators claim Venessa Thomas submitted hundreds of questionable claims, including so-called "impossible days" in which more than 40 hours of therapy services were billed within a single 24-hour period. Authorities also allege she used patient information obtained through Medicaid systems to create "phantom" clients and submit fraudulent claims.

Investigators say the funds were spent on travel, luxury purchases, and medical spa treatments. Thomas was arrested June 18 and later released on bail. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations have not yet been tested in court.
