✈️ Gianna Capri Soars at Girls in Aviation Day
Ormond Beach’s 11-year-old Gianna Capri, the first Miss Florida Junior All American, joined in the 11th annual Girls in Aviation Day on Saturday, Sept. 20, held at Daytona Beach International Airport and hosted by SheltAir in partnership with the Women in Aviation International Daytona Beach Chapter. Gianna held a meet‑and‑greet to interact with attendees and spoke about her initiative, Michael’s Ohana, while collecting toys for its upcoming holiday drive.
Her connection to aviation runs deep: her mother, Jennifer Capri, is a pilot. Gianna noted in a press release, “To be able to attend an event of this magnitude when I was growing would have been incredible.” The day offered young girls hands‑on exhibits, demonstrations, and opportunities to meet female professionals — pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers — to help broaden their view of possible careers. Daytona Beach Chapter President Vanesa Miksa said the event lets girls “step into the world of aviation… and discover that the sky is not the limit but just the beginning.”

🎼 5,000+ Fifth Graders Enjoy Young People’s Concert
On Tuesday, Sept. 23, more than 5,000 Volusia County fifth graders converged on the Peabody Auditorium for the annual Young People’s Concert, presented in partnership with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance, titled “Where in the World is the OPO?”, is part of a 20‑plus‑year tradition designed to foster cultural literacy, listening skills, and an emotional connection to the arts.
Volusia County Schools shared on Facebook that this event bridges classroom learning with real-world experience: “From the first note to the final bow, it was an unforgettable morning filled with music, learning, and inspiration.” Students from Tomoka Elementary and others got to witness live orchestral performance and see how music can bring stories and global themes to life.

🌿 Tomoka State Park Remains Open Despite Partial Road Closure
Although part of North Beach Street near Tomoka River is closed due to flooding, Tomoka State Park and its Tomoka Outpost remain open and accessible. The road closure starts north of the park entrance, extending to Pine Tree Drive, but the southern access from North Beach Street is unaffected.
The park’s hours are 8 a.m. until sundown daily, and the Outpost operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Tuesday (closed Wednesdays). The closure signage at Inglesa Avenue reflects the northern cutoff, but visitors heading from the south can still enter and enjoy trails, river views, and park amenities.
