It sounds unusual at first: releasing 32 million mosquitoes on purpose.

But Google’s “Debug” initiative says it’s a science-backed effort to reduce disease. The company has filed for an experimental permit to release lab-bred male mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria. When these males mate with wild females, the eggs don’t hatch — reducing populations of Culex quinquefasciatus, a carrier of West Nile virus.

Only male mosquitoes would be released, and males do not bite. Researchers say the approach is an alternative to chemical pesticides and builds on decades of sterile insect techniques used in agriculture.

The proposal is currently under review by the Environmental Protection Agency, with a public comment period open through June 5.

Scientists emphasize the goal is disease reduction — not increasing mosquito nuisance levels.

With school out for summer, the Ormond Beach Police Department says it’s seeing more e-bikes and e-motos on local roads, sidewalks and trails — and reminding parents to stay involved.

Under Florida law, not every electric two-wheeler qualifies as a bicycle. Vehicles without pedals, exceeding 750 watts, or capable of speeds above 28 mph with motor assistance may legally be classified as motorcycles or motor vehicles. That could require registration, insurance and a valid driver license.

Police stress that education and supervision are key to preventing serious crashes and injuries. Officials are encouraging families to review state statutes and ensure young riders understand both traffic rules and equipment requirements.

The message is simple: know what your child is riding — and know what the law says.

🎥 Debate Continues Over Live Video Streaming of Meetings

Meanwhile, transparency and accessibility are front and center in Ormond Beach.

During a recent City Commission meeting, discussion resurfaced about adding live video streaming to city meetings. Currently, Ormond Beach provides audio streaming, but not live video — making it one of the few major cities in Volusia County without both services.

Commissioners requested updated cost estimates after the roughly $120,000 line item for video streaming was removed from last year’s budget. Questions were also raised about potential legal considerations tied to visual broadcasting.

Supporters argue that live video is essential for residents who cannot attend meetings in person due to health, transportation or scheduling limitations — especially when visual materials like charts and presentations are shown.
