🏠 Habitat and County Partner to House Four Veterans

Four local veterans are one step closer to homeownership thanks to a partnership between West Volusia Habitat for Humanity and Volusia County’s Volusia Values Veterans Program (V3P). Construction is wrapping up on four homes along East Walts Avenue in DeLand, with veterans services staff and local volunteers pitching in for the final push.

Over two days in May, five veterans services officers and a corrections officer joined fellow veterans to paint and landscape the properties. Beyond volunteer labor, the County’s Community Assistance Division provided $79,400 in State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) funding to support construction, and households may also receive down payment assistance.

Some homeowners were referred through Halifax Urban Ministries’ Barracks of Hope program, which serves veterans overcoming homelessness and other challenges.

“Stable housing is one of the most powerful tools we have,” said Veterans Services Director Scott Olson — and this effort puts that belief into action.

🇺🇸 What’s Open (and Closed) This Memorial Day

As Memorial Day approaches, Volusia County has outlined holiday closures and service schedules to help residents plan ahead.

All County administrative offices and public library branches will be closed Monday, May 25, reopening Tuesday. However, residents in unincorporated areas can expect no changes to garbage, recycling, yard waste, or bulk collection. The West Volusia Transfer Station and Tomoka Farms Road Landfill will also operate as usual.

For transit riders, VoTran and VoAccess will run on a Sunday schedule, though VoRide services will not operate on the holiday.

Several facilities that are typically closed on Mondays — including Lyonia Environmental Center, DeBary Hall, and the Marine Science Center — will also remain closed for Memorial Day.

The holiday may mean lighter office traffic, but essential services will largely remain on track.

💡 Daytona International Speedway to Install New LED Lighting

Big changes are coming to Daytona International Speedway — and they’ll be bright.

The iconic 2.5-mile track is installing a new, state-of-the-art LED lighting system spanning the entire racing surface. The project, led by Musco Lighting, is already underway and expected to be completed in January 2027 — just in time for the Rolex 24 and the Daytona 500.

The upgraded system will deliver brighter, more consistent illumination while cutting energy consumption by 50 percent. LED RGB accent lighting will also sync with caution lights, adding a new visual element for fans in the stands and watching at home.

Speedway President Frank Kelleher said the project ensures the venue continues setting the standard for motorsports, while NASCAR officials noted it supports broader sustainability goals — including net-zero operating emissions by 2035.

In short, the future of racing at Daytona is looking a lot more luminous.

🌊 Beach Safety in Focus After Tragic Incident

A 2-year-old girl died May 23 after running into a traffic lane on the sands of New Smyrna Beach and being struck by a vehicle. The incident occurred near East Seventh Avenue. Authorities say the driver remained on scene and impairment or excessive speed are not believed to be factors.

With beach traffic increasing during holiday weekends, officials are urging parents to consider non-driving sections of the beach when visiting with children. For those in driving zones, beach safety officials recommend setting up on the ocean side of traffic lanes and holding children’s hands when crossing.

The tragedy underscores an important message: even in familiar places, vigilance matters.
