⛳ Hole-in-One x3: Senior Golfer Defies the Odds
In a feat that would make even pro golfers do a double take, 78-year-old Bill Kowske nailed three holes-in-one in just 12 days at Halifax Plantation Golf Club. The retired mid-handicapper hit his aces on Jan. 9, 13, and 20 during casual play with the Men’s Golf Association—twice on the par-3 No. 3 and once on No. 13.
Kowske’s odds-defying achievement is more than lucky; it’s borderline mythical. GolfPass puts the chance of a single hole-in-one at 1 in 12,500. Doing it three times in under two weeks? “Inconceivable,” as The Princess Bride would put it.
Using an 8-iron, pitching wedge, and 9-iron respectively, Kowske didn’t always see his shots drop, but he knew they were good. “You hope it gets to the green, you never expect it to go in the hole,” he said.
While the rest of his round wasn’t exactly PGA Tour material, Kowske laughed off the miracle streak: “I’m trying to win the Lotto now.”

🚔 Jersey Trespasser Found in Condemned Hotel
From the fairways to felonies: A 20-year-old New Jersey man found himself on the wrong side of the law after breaking into a condemned hotel in Ormond Beach.
Spotted through a broken window by police officers during a routine patrol, the man fled the scene when approached, ignoring commands to stop. His bid for freedom was short-lived—he was eventually caught at a nearby, fully operational hotel.
He admitted to “exploring” the shuttered building and ran when he saw officers. His night of urban exploration ended with a trip to jail, underscoring that condemned doesn’t mean unmonitored.

🧤 Need Warmth? Cold-Weather Shelters Now Open
As temperatures dip across Volusia County, cold-weather shelters have opened their doors through Wednesday, Jan. 28, offering relief to those without heat or housing.
The Bridge in DeLand is providing overnight shelter from 6:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. with breakfast included. Meanwhile, on the east side of the county, Halifax Urban Ministries is working with local churches and nonprofits to place individuals in warm, safe accommodations.
Transportation support may be available through VoTran, coordinated by community partners. Those needing help are urged to call early to arrange placement and logistics.
Volusia County is actively supporting these efforts by supplying shelters with water, food, bedding, and other essentials. It's a reminder that community collaboration can provide life-saving warmth in cold times.

🦉 Wild Encounters Await at Expanded Aviary
Animal lovers take note: the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet has unveiled a newly expanded aviary, offering a close-up look at Florida’s feathered residents—from pelicans and gulls to owls and more.
The updated exhibit is more than just a photo op. Many of the birds here are recovering from injuries or are permanent residents due to conditions that make wild release impossible. Now, they serve as educators, helping visitors understand conservation, wildlife rehab, and the impact humans have on local ecosystems.
Education manager Shell Rossi brings these stories to life daily, engaging guests with hands-on learning. With over 19,000 birds and 28,000 reptiles helped since opening, the Center is part sanctuary, part science class.
Inside the new education center, you can meet snakes, watch seahorses get their meals, and explore interactive exhibits. Open Tuesday through Sunday, it’s an ideal stop for families or anyone curious about Florida’s wild side.
