🕊️ Honoring the Fallen in a Time-Held Tradition

A quiet sense of reverence filled Daytona Memorial Park on May 21 as law enforcement agencies gathered for the 2026 Volusia and Flagler County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony. Hosted this year by the Port Orange Police Department, the annual event paid tribute to officers and K-9s who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino opened the ceremony, followed by keynote remarks from Mayor Scott Stiltner. The department’s Honor Guard placed a memorial wreath in recognition of lives lost — some dating back to 1895.

Among those remembered were Ormond Beach Police Officer Robert Grim and Cpl. Michael Bakaysa, as well as six fallen members of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office spanning nearly a century. The ceremony stood as a powerful reminder of service, sacrifice and the deep roots of law enforcement in our community.

🎓 Elks Lodge Awards $7,000 to Seabreeze Seniors

In a celebration of academic achievement and community spirit, the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge awarded $7,000 in scholarships to five Seabreeze High School seniors during a May 15 dinner held in their honor.

The Lodge contributed $4,000 directly, with an additional $3,000 presented on behalf of the Florida State Elks Association. Isabel Mazelow and Britton Prewitt each received $1,000 Legacy Scholarships, while Maggie Harris and Lucky Boren were awarded $1,000 Lodge Scholarships.

Ye’Nile McCoy received the $3,000 C. Valentine Bates Memorial HOPE Scholarship, representing the Florida State Elks Association’s investment in future leaders.

The evening, complete with dinner sponsored by Heli-Hogs, brought together students and families to mark an important milestone. Each recipient was presented with a certificate — and a strong show of support from a community clearly rooting for their success.

🚤 Memorial Day Boating Season Kicks Off with Safety in Focus

As Memorial Day ushers in peak boating season, local law enforcement agencies are ramping up patrols on area waterways. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, along with Volusia Sheriff’s marine units, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard, will increase their presence to help ensure a safe holiday weekend.

In 2025, Florida recorded 43 fatal boating accidents resulting in 51 deaths, with drowning listed as the leading cause. Officials say many incidents stem from preventable factors: operator inattention, excessive speed in no-wake zones, lack of safety equipment, and alcohol use.

Sheriff Rick Staly is urging boaters to designate a sober captain, wear life jackets — especially children under 6 — and file float plans before heading out. With more than a million registered vessels in Florida, heightened awareness is key.

Or, as one local boat club executive put it: “Slow is pro.”
