🌀 Hurricane Exercise Strengthens Emergency Readiness

Volusia County emergency responders, municipal leaders and community partners recently came together for the county's annual Hurricane Preparedness Exercise, putting emergency plans into action before the peak of storm season. Held at the Emergency Operations Center in Daytona Beach, the training simulated an approaching hurricane and challenged participants to coordinate resources, share critical information and respond to changing conditions throughout the exercise. Representatives from county departments, local governments, public safety agencies and nonprofit organizations all took part, reinforcing the partnerships that become essential during a real emergency. County officials encourage residents to use this time to review their own hurricane plans, build emergency supply kits and sign up for emergency alerts at www.volusia.gov/alertvolusia before severe weather threatens.

📚 School Board Plans Another Budget Review

The Volusia County School Board will hold a special meeting in the coming weeks to continue discussions about the district's proposed 2026-27 budget before the first public hearing on Sept. 8. The additional meeting follows weeks of debate over whether the district should maintain its proposed property tax rate or reduce it to the rollback rate. District officials have warned that adopting the rollback rate would reduce recurring revenue by approximately $5 million, potentially requiring cuts equivalent to 70 to 75 full-time positions. Board members remain divided on how best to balance taxpayer concerns with maintaining classroom services, and the upcoming meeting is expected to provide a clearer picture of what budget reductions would be necessary under different funding scenarios.

💧 Rally Focuses on Protecting Volusia's Water

Residents interested in water quality and environmental issues are invited to attend the Protect Volusia's Land and Water Rally on Thursday, Aug. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. at 2A Ranch and Sanctuary, 3455 Relay Road in Ormond Beach. Organizers say the event will feature grassroots candidates and community discussions centered on protecting local water resources, including efforts to support a proposed Volusia County charter amendment addressing wastewater disposal practices. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn more about the initiative and sign a petition supporting the proposed amendment. The event is open to the public for those interested in learning more about the issue and participating in the community conversation.
