Rockefeller's Winter Home Transforms for Ormond Beach's Annual Christmas Celebration

Ormond Beach is set to experience a festive transformation with the 45th annual Christmas Gala at The Casements. This year, the event honors Siobhan Daly, a long-serving cultural center coordinator, with a "Holly Jolly Christmas" theme, as requested by her in previous years. The gala, which is free to the public, will commence on December 1st with a tree lighting ceremony and Santa's arrival, continuing through the weekend with various activities. Volunteers have meticulously decorated Rockefeller's former winter home, emphasizing traditional Christmas colors and adding handmade crafts to the mix. This festive makeover not only pays tribute to Daly's 22-year dedication to the city but also celebrates her impending retirement. The gala promises an array of entertainment, food trucks, and train rides, alongside a 20-foot tree in The Casements' atrium, showcasing a Candy Land-inspired design with icicles and peppermints, reflecting the collaborative efforts of the Casements Guild's docents.

Financial Strain Hits Integrity Cat Rescue, Slows Adoption Rates

Integrity Cat Rescue, led by founder and president Shira Beth Wild, is facing significant challenges in its mission to trap-neuter-return (TNR) cats. The organization, based in Port Orange, is grappling with increasing costs and stricter regulations from both county and local authorities. The rising expenses, partly due to inflation affecting cat food prices, have dramatically reduced the number of cats they can assist. Additionally, the difficulty in securing appointments for neutering services has further limited their impact.

Ms. Wild, who has been involved in cat rescue since 2005 and founded Integrity Cat Rescue in 2019, notes that the financial strain is not only affecting their operations but also potential adopters. The time taken to find homes for kittens has extended from one month to up to six months. This trend is echoed by other rescue organizations in the area.

2023 has been particularly challenging for TNR efforts, with an overwhelming number of cats in need of assistance. Ms. Wild urges cat owners to ensure their pets are neutered to help control the population. Integrity Cat Rescue, primarily self-funded by Ms. Wild, who also holds two jobs, operates on a tight budget. She emphasizes that the community should understand the financial constraints faced by rescues compared to better-funded shelters and appeals for support through donations, volunteering, or adoption.

Florida Vets Alert Dog Owners About Rising Unidentified Canine Illness

Florida pet owners are being cautioned about a mysterious and potentially deadly respiratory illness affecting dogs, an issue that has escalated to concern in 14 states, including Florida. Veterinarians report a rise in cases of this illness, which does not respond to conventional antibiotics. The University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine is investigating whether this illness is a new disease or a variant of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, also known as kennel cough.

The illness, first reported in Oregon this summer, has now been identified in several states: California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The lack of a centralized reporting system makes it difficult to determine if there's an actual increase in the incidence or severity of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex.

Researchers are exploring the possibility of new or more aggressive pathogens. The symptoms of this respiratory illness in dogs include acute cough, sneezing, nasal and eye discharge, fever, anorexia, and lethargy. In severe cases, it can progress to pneumonia, requiring intensive care. Diagnostic testing has not confirmed many suspected cases, and the late timing of tests makes it challenging to identify culprits like influenza virus, pneumovirus, and respiratory coronavirus.

The illness spreads rapidly among dogs, especially in places where they interact closely, like dog parks, daycares, and shows. However, animal shelters have been less affected. Importantly, there is no indication that this illness poses a risk to humans or other species.

Kosher Cuisine Returns to Ormond Beach with Gili's Kitchen Opening

Photo Ormond Local Pulse

In a move that revitalizes the kosher dining landscape in Ormond Beach, Gili’s Kitchen OB, a new Mediterranean-inspired kosher eatery, commenced its operations this past spring. The restaurant, co-owned by Ricki Ben Simon and her brother-in-law, Gili Ben Simon, occupies the former site of Eden Fresh Café at 188 E. Granada Blvd, marking a significant step in filling the void left by the recent closures of local kosher establishments Eden Fresh Café and J Grill.

Ricki Ben Simon, an Israeli native who has resided in Jacksonville for 18 years, embarked on this venture after recognizing a need in the community. The decision to open a kosher restaurant was influenced by her desire to offer something unique in the culinary scene. According to sources, the distinctiveness of Gili’s Kitchen lies in its innovative serving methods and the use of unique ingredients.

Gili Ben Simon, the namesake of the restaurant, brings over two decades of experience in the catering and restaurant industry, having honed his skills in Israel, Cambodia, and Paris. His culinary expertise is a cornerstone of the restaurant's appeal, with Ricki Ben Simon noting that his cooking is "on a different level."

The duo initially focused on catering through their Jacksonville restaurant, also named Gili’s Kitchen, which opened in 2018. However, they soon shifted their focus to establishing a restaurant presence. Both the Jacksonville and Ormond Beach locations offer catering service.

Gili’s Kitchen OB aims to cater to a diverse clientele, including the sizable Jewish community in Ormond Beach and tourists. The menu is a blend of traditional Jewish fare like falafel, shawarma, and matzoh ball soup, alongside more universal offerings such as burgers and Philly cheesesteaks.

Ricki Ben Simon also shed light on the principles of kosher food, emphasizing the humane treatment of animals and the meticulous health checks involved, overseen by a certified shochet.

Gili's Kitchen is located at 188 E Granada Blvd, Ormond Beach, and is open Monday through Thursday from 11am to 8pm, and Sundays from 12pm to 8pm, while remaining closed on Fridays and Saturdays. You can order online or reserve a table, and Gili’s has drive through options as well. They can be reached at (386) 265-1424.
