Local Restaurants Partner in Ormond Beach's Ambitious Charity Drive"

In a collaborative effort to support local schools and nonprofit organizations, Givebacks, Kiwanis READS!, and the city of Ormond Beach have partnered with a host of local restaurants. This initiative, encompassing programs like Givebacks, Dine to Donate, and Shop to Give, aims to channel funds to educational and charitable causes through everyday activities like dining and shopping.

Participating businesses contribute a portion of their proceeds to the program, allowing customers to support their chosen schools or nonprofits simply by patronizing these establishments. This innovative approach turns routine activities into opportunities for community support.

The campaign, dubbed Givebacks for Education, has set an ambitious goal of raising over $100,000 for Volusia County schools and nonprofits by the end of 2024. To mark the holiday season and celebrate the campaign's successful launch in Ormond Beach, restaurant partners will increase their donations to 15% for a limited period, starting from December 8th and concluding at midnight on December 10th.

The list of participating restaurants includes local favorites like Rose Villa, Grind and Kona Tiki Bar, Ormond Garage, Neighborhood Scoops and many others, strategically located near the parade route. In addition to dining, Givebacks is enhancing its impact by offering increased donations of 20% for online shopping at select retailers throughout December.

Florida Introduces Enhanced Online Portal for Government Assistance Programs

Starting Tuesday, Florida residents who benefit from government aid such as food, cash, or health care will transition to a newly launched website. The Florida Department of Children and Families is introducing the "My Access Portal," a revamped platform designed to improve the management of SNAP, TANF, and Medicaid services.

Accessible via MyACCESS.myflfamilies.com, this modernized website boasts improved mobile device compatibility, streamlined document upload processes, and overall enhanced user experience. The goal is to expedite the process of obtaining government assistance.

To use this new system, Floridians must set up a new account, link their existing assistance programs, and employ a two-step verification process for added security. The Department of Children and Families assures users that this changeover will not impact their current benefits.

For additional support and resources, including video tutorials, individuals can visit the DCF website. Questions can also be directed to the Florida customer call center at 1-850-300-4323.

Florida's Gas Prices Take a Downward Turn, Averaging $3.13 Per Gallon

In a recent turn of events, Florida's gas prices have begun to decrease, marking a shift from the previous week's unexpected surge. As of the latest reports, the average price per gallon in the Sunshine State has settled at $3.13, reflecting a notable decrease from last week's peak.

The beginning of last week saw a low in gas prices, reaching $3.01 per gallon, but this was short-lived. By Thursday, the prices had escalated to $3.17 per gallon. According to sources, this fluctuation in gas prices is somewhat perplexing, especially considering the continuous weekly decline in oil and gasoline futures.

Despite the lack of a clear reason for the sudden increase in prices, it appears that the costs are realigning with the previous week's levels in many cities across Florida. This adjustment brings a slight reprieve to motorists who had been facing higher fuel costs.

A quick survey of Ormond area gas stations Monday afternoon on Gas Buddy showed, you guessed it, Bucee’s with the lowest price at $2.71 for regular gas.

Experts suggest several strategies for consumers to save on gasoline. These include combining errands to reduce driving time, shopping around for the best gas prices locally, opting to pay with cash to avoid extra charges imposed by some retailers for credit card payments, removing unnecessary weight from vehicles to improve fuel efficiency, and driving conservatively to maximize fuel economy.

Iowa Veterinarian's Bold Move: Using COVID-19 Drug Paxlovid to Treat Mysterious Dog Illness

In a remarkable turn of events, a veterinarian in Cass County, Iowa, has potentially found a breakthrough in treating a mysterious illness affecting dogs nationwide. Dr. Doug Swain of Lyman Vet Clinic, driven by desperation to save a critically ill bulldog named Cash, resorted to using Paxlovid, a drug commonly used in humans to combat COVID-19. This unconventional approach appears to have yielded positive results.

Cash, suffering from severe respiratory distress and coughing up blood, showed dramatic improvement within days of receiving the antiviral medication. According to sources, Dr. Swain was inspired to try this treatment after observing similarities between the symptoms in dogs and those experienced by humans with COVID-19. Notably, Dr. Swain himself had endured a severe bout of COVID-19, spending nine days in intensive care, which further informed his decision.

The American Veterinary Medical Association has acknowledged the spread of this enigmatic canine illness across at least 14 states, including Florida, with no established treatment or definitive cause identified so far. Laboratories nationwide are reportedly working intensively to pinpoint the cause of the disease.

In the meantime, veterinarians are urging dog owners to keep their pets' vaccinations up to date and to practice social distancing measures similar to those recommended for humans during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as avoiding dog parks, to prevent further spread of this mysterious illness.
