“A Date Which Will Live In Infamy”

December 7th marks a poignant day in American history, as the nation remembers the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service in 1941. This catastrophic event, which plunged the United States into World War II, unfolded on a tranquil Sunday morning in Hawaii, forever altering the course of history.

Just before 8 a.m., waves of Japanese fighter planes descended upon the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in a meticulously planned assault. The attack, executed with devastating precision, targeted the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy. In a matter of two hours, the Japanese forces managed to inflict severe damage, sinking four U.S. Navy battleships and damaging four others. Additionally, they destroyed or damaged more than 300 aircraft, and critical infrastructure at the base suffered significant destruction.

The human cost was profound and tragic. Over 2,400 Americans lost their lives, and another 1,000 were wounded. The surprise and magnitude of the attack left the nation in shock and grief, galvanizing the American public’s sentiment towards entering the war.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in an address to Congress on December 8, famously declared the date of the attack as "a date which will live in infamy." This speech led to the United States formally declaring war on Japan, marking its entry into World War II.

Pearl Harbor remains a somber reminder of the fragility of peace and the devastating impact of war. It stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served and lost their lives on that fateful day. As years pass, the memory of Pearl Harbor continues to resonate, underscoring the importance of vigilance and the pursuit of peace in international relations.

Ormond Beach Murder Suspect's Trial Faces Potential Gag Order

Charles Ivy of Ormond Beach, charged with the murder of Den'Jah Moore and her infant son in Daytona Beach, is at the center of a defense request for a gag order. The defense aims to limit pre-trial publicity, citing comments by the Police Chief and the potential pursuit of the death penalty. The gag order would restrict information release to the media by involved parties, aiming to ensure a fair trial.

Ormond Beach Commission Advances Plans for New Emergency Center and Police Station

The Ormond Beach City Commission has decided to move forward with plans for a new emergency operations center and joint police station by voting to hire a consultant for a space needs analysis. Commissioner Travis Sargent opposed the decision, citing cost concerns and reluctance to relocate the police station. The city had previously sought state funding for the project, which was vetoed, possibly due to a lack of supporting studies. Public opinion at the meeting was divided, with some questioning the necessity and cost of the project. Mayor Bill Partington advocated for the new facilities, highlighting the need for improved conditions for first responders. The Commission will review the project again after receiving a bid for the study, with over $2.9 million already budgeted for planning and design.

Tragedy Strikes Home-Medical Examiner’s Son Falls Victim to Fentanyl Crisis

Andre Boren, an investigator with the medical examiner’s office serving Seminole county, whose job involves investigating deaths, faces the personal tragedy of his son Landon's death due to a fentanyl overdose. Landon, a high school senior, had mistaken the lethal drug for cocaine. This incident underscores the widespread issue of fentanyl overdoses in Volusia County, where the drug is involved in a majority of overdose deaths. The crisis affects people from all walks of life, as noted by local law enforcement officials. Efforts like the DART team are in place to combat this epidemic, but the challenge is daunting. Andre Boren's experience reflects a national emergency, with fentanyl increasingly replacing other drugs and causing accidental deaths.

Hanukkah Begins This Evening

Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, commences this evening, December 7, ushering in a period of celebration and reflection for Jewish communities worldwide. This eight-day festival, rooted in historical and spiritual significance, commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C.

The story of Hanukkah begins with the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. The Jewish people, led by Judah Maccabee, fought for their religious freedom. After reclaiming the Temple, which had been desecrated, they sought to rededicate it. The miracle of Hanukkah is centered around the menorah, a seven-branched candelabrum used in the Temple. According to tradition, although there was only enough consecrated oil to keep the menorah's candles burning for a single day, the flames continued flickering for eight nights, giving them time to prepare more oil. This event symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and faith over adversity.

Observance of Hanukkah involves lighting the menorah, with an additional candle lit each night until all eight are illuminated. Families gather to recite blessings, sing songs, and recall the story of the Maccabees. Traditional foods, often fried in oil like latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts), are enjoyed, symbolizing the oil from the Hanukkah story. Children play with dreidels, a four-sided spinning top, and gifts are exchanged, fostering a sense of joy and community. Hanukkah is not just a historical commemoration but a living tradition that reinforces the enduring themes of resilience and hope.

We wish all our Jewish friends and neighbors a joyous celebration in these troubled times.
