Belvedere Terminals Seeks New Sites as Volusia County Imposes Moratorium

In a recent development in Volusia County, an application for a truck terminal at 874 Hull Road in Ormond Beach was halted due to a moratorium. Volusia County Manager George Recktenwald informed the County Council that the county is currently unable to process any conceptual site plan applications for areas zoned as heavy industrial. This decision, announced during the Dec. 5 County Council meeting, aligns with the council's Nov. 21 directive for a nine-month moratorium in response to public concerns over a proposed fuel farm by Belvedere Terminals on the same property.

Recktenwald also noted that Belvedere Terminals is exploring alternative locations along the rail line, extending from southern Flagler County to northern Brevard County. Concurrently, at the Ormond Beach City Commission meeting held on Dec. 5, commissioners unanimously decided to eliminate the city's I-2 "Heavy Industrial" zoning district. This move reflects the growing sensitivity towards industrial developments and their impact on local communities

Ormond Beach Fire Dept. Subdues Triplex Fire on Rockefeller Drive

In a swift response, Ormond Beach firefighters were dispatched to a major fire at a triplex on Rockefeller Drive, nestled between South Halifax Drive and Riverside Drive, on Wednesday afternoon. The incident, which triggered a traffic alert at approximately 4:43 p.m., presented a formidable challenge to the responding teams.

Upon arrival, the crews were confronted with a structure that was already 50% consumed by intense flames and heavy smoke. Firefighters initially attempted an interior attack, carefully searching each unit of the building. However, as conditions rapidly deteriorated, they were forced to switch to a defensive strategy until they could safely reenter and effectively subdue the blaze.

Sources indicated that the firefighting efforts were further complicated by nearby construction features and power lines, which posed additional risks and tactical challenges. Despite these obstacles, the fire was successfully brought under control within about an hour.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, no injuries were reported. However, the building was deemed a total loss. Neighbors and the property owner, who was reached by phone, confirmed that the triplex had been vacant for some time.

The Ormond Beach Fire Department (OBFD) received crucial support from Volusia County Fire Rescue and the Daytona Beach Fire Department in tackling the incident.
