Cpl. Michael Bakaysa Remembered: A Hero's Farewell in Ormond Beach

ICpl. Michael Bakaysa, a dedicated officer of the Ormond Beach Police Department for over 27 years, was honored in a large funeral procession on Thursday, following his unexpected death at 54. The procession, comprising about 300 law enforcement vehicles, proceeded to the Daytona Beach Drive-in Christian Church. The community showed their respect along Granada Boulevard. Bakaysa, who began his law enforcement career as a teenager, was known for his humility, professionalism, and preference for the midnight shift. He passed away after a medical incident post a training session. During the service, Police Chief Jesse Godfrey and others praised Bakaysa's exemplary service and leadership. In recognition of his dedication, Bakaysa was posthumously promoted to corporal.

Volusia County Sees Record High Home Prices Amid Rising Inventory

In Volusia County, the real estate market has been experiencing a notable trend: despite an increase in new listings, home prices have reached an all-time high. This pattern comes as a surprise to many, given the typical relationship between supply and demand in the housing market.

Realtors in Volusia County reported a significant decline in the sales of single-family homes in October, a 28.5% drop from the previous year. This decrease is largely attributed to the impact of last year's hurricanes, Ian and Nicole, which disrupted the normal flow of real estate transactions. Despite this, the median sale price in Volusia County rose to a record $360,495, a slight increase from the previous year. Similarly, the average sale price saw a substantial rise of 13.6%.

The increase in prices occurred even though there was a 5.7% rise in new listings, bringing the total number of available homes in Volusia to the highest since May 2020. Experts suggest that the supply of homes is still not meeting the high demand, which is keeping prices elevated. Bill Navarra, a local real estate broker, believes that the market would shift from a seller's to a neutral market at around 3,000 active listings, and to a buyer's market at 4,000. Currently, the active listings are significantly lower than these thresholds.

CVS CostVantage: A New Era of Transparency in Drug Pricing

CVS has announced a significant change to its pharmacy reimbursement model, which could impact prescription drug costs for consumers. The new system, named CVS CostVantage, is designed to be more transparent and simple, basing drug prices and reimbursements on the cost of the drug, a set markup, and a fee. This model contrasts with the current complex system managed by pharmacy benefit managers. Set to launch in 2025 for commercial payors, the change may lead to varied pricing for different drugs, with an overall expectation of more reductions than increases in costs for consumers, employers, and health insurers. This move is part of a larger shift in the prescription drug industry, marked by demands for greater pricing transparency and recent strategic changes by major insurers like Blue Shield of California.
