Ormond Parade Start Delayed Due to Medical Incident
If you’re wondering why the Ormond Christmas Parade start was delayed, it was the result of a medical incident involving a woman who apparently tripped near the curb and fell to the sidewalk striking her head. She was transported by the EMS and escorted by two police motorcycle units. No further information is available at this time.
Big John's Legacy Continues With $140K Donation to Our Lady of Lourdes Academy
Former Volusia County Councilman and radio host Big John's legacy of philanthropy lives on through a generous $140,000 donation to Our Lady of Lourdes Academy from his estate. The funds, aimed at providing scholarships and essential support for students in need, were celebrated at a Daytona Beach Rotary event. Remembered for his big heart and dedication to education, Big John's contribution is seen as a beacon of hope and a means to empower future generations, as noted by the Academy's headmaster and Big John's longtime friend and attorney.
Florida House Panel Passes Bill to Limit Left Lane Use on Highways

The Florida House panel has unanimously approved a bill (HB 317) that restricts drivers from cruising in the left lane on certain highways. The proposal, aimed at improving traffic flow and safety, applies to highways with at least two lanes in the same direction and a speed limit of 65 mph or higher. The bill sets a non-criminal fine for misuse of the left lane, with some exceptions. An identical Senate bill (SB 258) will be considered in the 2024 legislative session. The initiative follows previous attempts to pass similar legislation.
TikTok Wins Legal Battle in Indiana Over User Data Safety Claims

A lawsuit filed by Indiana against TikTok, accusing it of false claims about data safety and age-appropriate content, was dismissed due to lack of jurisdiction and the nature of free app downloads. The state, respecting but disagreeing with the ruling, is considering an appeal. The lawsuit was part of Indiana's broader efforts against perceived threats from foreign tech companies, including actions against Instagram's parent company, Meta, and a ban on TikTok on government devices.
FBI Warns Against Risks of Public Phone Charging Stations

The FBI is cautioning consumers about the potential dangers of using public phone charging stations, citing the risk of malicious software being transmitted through these stations. According to a recent tweet from the FBI's Denver branch, cybercriminals are exploiting public USB charging stations, such as those in malls and airports, to spread malware and monitoring software. The agency's advice is straightforward: consumers should carry their own chargers and USB cords and opt for electrical outlets instead of public USB stations.
This warning is not new in the world of cybersecurity. The term "juice jacking," coined by researchers in 2011, describes the risk of plugging devices into compromised charging stations or power strips. Drew Paik, formerly of the security firm Authentic8, highlighted in a 2017 CNN interview the dangers of using such compromised ports. Since the USB cords used for charging also facilitate data transfer, a hacked port could potentially give hackers access to personal information such as emails, text messages, photos, and contacts.
The FBI's reminder serves as a general caution for the American public to remain vigilant, especially while traveling. This warning is echoed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which updated a blog post emphasizing the risk of corrupted charging ports. The FCC warned that these compromised ports could be used to lock devices or steal personal data and passwords. It also noted instances where criminals have left infected cables at charging stations or distributed them as promotional gifts, further underscoring the potential risks associated with public charging options.
