According to NOAA, low-pressure from the Gulf of Mexico brought heavy rains and high winds to Volusia County over the weekend but caused no significant damage or flooding. The system, which drenched Daytona Beach with up to 4.5 inches of rain, moved north out of the state on Sunday. A subsequent cold front is expected to lower temperatures significantly, with Tuesday morning temperatures in the mid-40s and wind chills making it feel colder. The cold spell will continue into Wednesday, but a gradual warming trend is forecasted, with daytime highs reaching near 64 degrees. By the weekend, temperatures are expected to rise further, with Saturday anticipated to be mostly sunny with a high near 68 degrees.

Ormond Beach Sues Flagler County Over Controversial Easement in Hunter’s Ridge Development

Ormond Beach has filed a lawsuit against Flagler County and a developer over an easement granted in the Hunter’s Ridge area, which is partly located within the city's boundaries. The city is concerned that this easement could lead to the construction of a paved road. Flagler County, through its attorney Al Hadeed, is seeking to resolve the issue by suggesting Ormond Beach acquire nearby conservation land and improve Durrance Lane. The dispute revolves around a logging trail, 40 Grade, which provides access to a large conservation area managed by Flagler County. The county argues that the easement is essential for conservation management and that creating an alternative access route would damage the environment. The lawsuit, which is not seeking monetary damages, aims to nullify the easement agreement. Flagler County is hoping for a resolution through mediation, avoiding further legal expenses.

Facing Threats Head-On: How Sheriff Chitwood Champions Justice in Volusia

Volusia County Sheriff’s Dept

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, known for his active role in community policing and addressing controversial issues, had an unconventional path to law enforcement. Initially resentful towards the police, including his own father, Chitwood's perspective shifted after working in Philadelphia's docks. His diverse experiences in Philadelphia's neighborhoods played a significant role in shaping his approach to policing. As sheriff, Chitwood has tackled violent crime and anti-Semitic threats, personally confronting suspects and facing personal threats from hate groups. Despite these challenges, he remains committed to combating racism and bigotry. Chitwood's hands-on approach to crime-fighting, including participating in investigations alongside his deputies, highlights his dedication to his role in law enforcement.

Ormond Beach Boy Scouts Receive International Symbol of Peace

Boy Scouts Troop 468 in Ormond Beach has received the "Peace Light," a flame originating from Bethlehem's grotto of Jesus' birth, symbolizing peace and friendship. The flame, managed by Peace Light North America, is traditionally retrieved by an Austrian child and distributed across Europe. This year, due to conflict in the region, the flame was lit in Bethlehem by a local girl and then transported to New York City. In Ormond Beach, the First United Methodist Church learned about the Peace Light through church member Mike Gulledge. The church hosted a ceremony where the troop received the light. Pastor Scott Smith lit two church candles with the Peace Light, intending to use them in the church's Christmas Eve services.

Dog Shampoo Can Harm Cats, Here's What to Use Instead

Recent concerns have emerged regarding the use of dog shampoo on cats, with experts cautioning against this practice due to significant differences in skin pH levels and potential allergic reactions to certain ingredients. While dogs and cats both require grooming, their skin's pH levels differ markedly, necessitating species-specific shampoo formulas. Dog skin is more alkaline, with a pH around 7.52, whereas cat skin is more acidic, averaging a pH of about 6.43. Using a shampoo that is too alkaline for cats can disrupt their skin's natural balance, leading to dryness, irritation, and increased susceptibility to infections.

Another critical factor is the composition of canine shampoos, which often contain ingredients like permethrin, pyrethrin, tea tree oil, and various essential oils or fragrances. These substances, while beneficial for dogs, can be toxic or harmful to cats. For instance, permethrin and pyrethrin, commonly found in dog flea shampoos, are particularly dangerous for cats, with permethrin having potentially fatal effects. Similarly, tea tree oil, despite its antibacterial and antifungal properties, can cause severe reactions in cats, including weakness, tremors, and even coma. Other essential oils like cinnamon, citrus, and peppermint, as well as isopropyl alcohol, can also cause skin irritation and respiratory issues in felines.

Given these risks, cat owners are advised to avoid using dog shampoo on their pets. In cases where cat-specific shampoo is unavailable, safer alternatives include tear-free baby shampoo, natural castile soap, Dawn dish soap, baking soda, and specially formulated pet wipes. These options, while not ideal substitutes for cat shampoo, can be used occasionally without causing harm. Additionally, a veterinary-approved waterless shampoo containing natural ingredients like aloe vera and oatmeal can provide a convenient and safe grooming solution for cats, especially those averse to water.
