Reminder About Ormond Water System Maintenance

The City of Ormond Beach Utilities Division will temporarily modify the disinfectant used for the City’s potable (drinking) water system. From December 4, 2023, through December 24, 2023, disinfection of the water distribution system will be performed with application of free chlorine (a stronger disinfectant) rather than chloramines (a longerlasting disinfectant comprised of combined chlorine-ammonia). This temporary disinfectant conversion, in conjunction with a coordinated flushing exercise, is a common practice for enhancing the effectiveness and reliability of disinfection in water distribution systems and is recommended by the Department of Environmental Protection. The normal use of the chloramine disinfectant will resume upon completion of the conversion period. During this 21-day period, the water continues to be of the highest quality and totally safe to drink. Customers may experience a slight difference in the taste and odor of the water as a result of the alternate disinfectant used. Customers on dialysis using proportioning machines to prepare dialysate are advised to contact their physician to obtain the appropriate steps to accommodate this change in water disinfectant use. Customers having fish tanks or aquatic species are advised to contact a professional aquarist to minimize any adverse effects on these items associated with chlorine. Please call the City of Ormond Beach Public Works Department with any questions concerning the information contained in this notice at (386) 676-3220.

Daytona Beach PD Officer Arrested, Accused of Assaulting Pregnant Woman

Daytona Beach Police Officer Rayshaun McGrew, 31, is currently facing serious allegations following his arrest on charges of aggravated battery. The charges are linked to a domestic incident that reportedly occurred while McGrew was off-duty. According to sources, McGrew is accused of pushing a pregnant woman to the ground and grabbing her neck. Despite the severity of these allegations, the victim did not seek medical treatment.

The Daytona Beach Police Department has responded to this incident by placing McGrew on administrative leave, a standard procedure in such cases. The department is conducting a detailed investigation, which includes both criminal and internal inquiries, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the incident.

McGrew's tenure with the department has been somewhat irregular, having initially joined in March 2020, resigned in early 2021, and then rejoining the force in mid-2022. The department has emphasized its commitment to conducting a transparent and impartial investigation into the matter.

New Operator Takes Over Ormond Beach Tennis Center

Ormond Beach Commissioners have accepted a proposal from Zen Tennis LLC to manage the Ormond Beach Tennis Center. The city has been seeking proposals for the management, promotion, operation, and maintenance of the center since then operator Jan Buenner indicated his intention not to renew his lease.

The city expressed interest in a tennis management contractor who can provide tennis instruction at all levels of participation, including private and group lessons, and junior programs. Trishna Patel, an experienced instructor of adults and children, has been inducted into Brown University's Athletic Hall of Fame. The center, located on the beachside, offers clay courts, which are ideal for older players but require frequent watering and brushing. The Ormond Beach Leisure Services Advisory Board recommended the commission pursue an ECHO grant to improve the center, which could include LED lighting and a freestanding pro shop with restrooms. The new operator is expected to increase membership and participation.

University of Florida Engaged in Fighting Retail Theft

In recent times, communities across the nation are grappling with a significant uptick in shoplifting incidents. This surge is not confined to any specific region but is a widespread issue, affecting both large cities and smaller towns. Retailers are facing mounting challenges as they witness an increase in the frequency and boldness of these thefts. Law enforcement agencies are responding with heightened vigilance and enhanced strategies to combat this growing concern. The phenomenon is causing considerable economic strain on businesses, prompting a call for collaborative efforts between law enforcement, community leaders, and retailers to address and mitigate this rising wave of retail crime. The University of Central Florida is working on the problem in their Loss Prevention Research Council mock department store. Watch the video below to see what they are doing.
