Volusia County to Meet TODAY on 9-Month Moratorium Amid Fuel Storage Facility Debate
A crucial hearing is scheduled for TODAY at 9am in Volusia County Council Chambers, which could lead to significant changes for a proposed fuel storage and distribution facility at 874 Hull Road. The hearing will address whether Volusia County should implement a 9 month moratorium on development in areas zoned for heavy industrial use, including the site proposed for the Belvedere Terminals project.
The project has raised concerns among residents and local leaders about potential hazards, including explosions, fuel leaks, and increased traffic. However, no alternative plans have been proposed. The site, under the county's jurisdiction, may face a nine-month development moratorium, extendable by three months, to review heavy industrial zoning regulations.
The county has temporarily stopped the Belvedere Terminals project, a decision that has been met with relief from the community. Residents, led by Elena Krafft, are advocating for a strong turnout at the upcoming meeting and seeking to remove the heavy industrial zoning from the area.
Belvedere Terminals' proposed facility includes six large fuel tanks and was initially planned to have 16 tanks for various substances. The area in question, mostly on Hull Road, consists of five parcels totaling about 74 acres. The current zoning allows for a range of industrial uses, including the proposed fuel facility.
While Belvedere Terminals is open to alternative locations, they have stated that none of the considered options so far meet the project's requirements.
Ormond Beach Downtown to Showcase Local Artists in Public Art Project
Ormond Beach is set to embrace public art in its downtown, following the City Commission's approval of a project by the Ormond Beach Arts District. This initiative will feature artistic wraps on traffic signal and streetlight cabinets along Granada Boulevard. Nine renowned local artists, all with over 25 years of residency in Ormond Beach and national acclaim, will have their works displayed. These artists, known for their diverse artistic mediums and community involvement, have donated their art for this purpose. The project, costing about $15,000, is funded by the city's Community Redevelopment Agency and is expected to last 3-5 years. A walking map will be created to guide visitors through this new artistic

Residents of the city and unincorporated Volusia County should note changes in garbage and recycling collection schedules due to the upcoming holiday season. On Christmas Day, Monday, December 25, and New Year's Day, Monday, January 1, there will be no garbage or recycling services.
In the city, the adjusted schedule will see Monday's collections shifted to Tuesday, December 26, and January 2. Similarly, Tuesday collections will occur on Wednesday, December 27, and January 3. Collections usually scheduled for Wednesday will take place on Saturday, December 30, and January 6.
For those residing in unincorporated Volusia County, the holiday schedule adjustment will follow a sequential shift. Collections for Monday will be moved to Tuesday, and this pattern will continue through the week, with Friday's collections occurring on Saturday.
'Captain America’ Impersonator Arrested at MacDill Air Force Base
Computer Generated Image
A man from Florida faced indictment on Tuesday for an incident last month involving an attempted breach at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Baruch Roche II, aged 33, encountered security challenges when he tried to drive into the base. Roche, instead of showing identification at the base gate, proclaimed himself as "Captain America" and insisted on entry, claiming he had an urgent meeting with a general to discuss "top secret information."
As per the U.S. Attorney's Office, Roche’s demeanor turned confrontational when entry was denied, and he vowed to come back every day until he found the officers who barred his entrance.
During the encounter, Roche was detained, and a search of his vehicle revealed an AR-15 rifle along with five magazines loaded with a total of 125 rounds of ammunition. Following this discovery, Roche was arrested and is now facing charges for attempting to bring a firearm into a federal facility.
Debris from Missing Fishing Boat Found in Flagler County, Ending Hope for Fishermen's Return

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has reported the discovery of debris from the Carol Anne, a fishing boat that disappeared on October 14 with three fishermen on board, on the beach near Jungle Hut Road. This finding is consistent with similar debris found in St. Johns and Volusia counties, further confirming the likely loss of the fishermen. The U.S. Coast Guard had ceased its search for the boat on October 26.
The Carol Anne, a 31-foot fishing vessel, left from near Mary Ross in Brunswick, Georgia, with Dalton Conway, Caleb Wilkinson, and Tyler Barlow. The men, employed as fishing contractors, were due back after a four-day fishing trip 80 miles offshore but never returned. The subsequent discovery of boat fragments along the coast south of Georgia has been a continuous reminder of the tragic incident.
A piece of the boat, identifiable by its paint, was found in Flagler County, the first such discovery in the area, following earlier findings in neighboring counties. The debris is believed to have been brought ashore by the rough sea conditions. The Coast Guard, informed of the discovery, has taken possession of the fragment.

Plastic Contamination Prompts Major Recall of TGI Fridays Boneless Chicken Bites

In a significant food safety alert, Simmons Prepared Foods Inc., based in Van Buren, Arkansas, has initiated a recall of approximately 26,550 pounds of TGI Fridays boneless chicken bites. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), these products may contain hazardous materials, specifically pieces of clear, hard plastic.
The affected items, produced on October 3, 2023, include 15-oz. cartons of "TGI FRIDAYS BONELESS CHICKEN BITES HONEY BBQ CHICKEN" with a lot code of KL3K03 and a Best By date of December 26, 2024. The packaging of these products features the establishment number "P-20287" within the USDA mark of inspection. These items have been distributed to retail locations across the nation.

Sources revealed that the issue came to light following consumer complaints about finding plastic pieces beneath the breading of the chicken bites. While there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or illnesses linked to the consumption of these products, the FSIS has expressed concern that some of the recalled items might still be in consumer freezers.
The FSIS is urging those who have purchased the affected products to either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase. In its commitment to public health, the FSIS regularly performs recall effectiveness checks to ensure that consumers are adequately informed and that the recalled products are effectively removed from availability.
Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or send a question via email to [email protected]. For consumers that need to report a problem with a meat, poultry, or egg product, the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System can be accessed 24 hours a day at https://foodcomplaint.fsis.usda.gov/eCCF/.
