The Halifax Humane Society (HHS) has announced the closure of its Cat and Adoption Centers within Volusia Mall, effective January 1, 2024. These centers, pivotal during a challenging period of a Pneumovirus outbreak, provided essential adoption services when the main shelter was temporarily shut. The 5,000-square-foot center, opened on July 15, was a response to a suspension in animal intake due to upper respiratory infections in dogs. HHS expressed immense gratitude for the community's support, which significantly aided in highlighting the needs of animals seeking homes. As these centers close, HHS encourages visits to their primary adoption facility at 2364 LPGA Blvd., Daytona Beach. The organization remains committed to exploring new ways to serve the community and support animal welfare.

Seven Sustainable Ways to Say Goodbye to Your Christmas Tree

As the holiday season draws to a close, many residents are left wondering what to do with their once-beloved Christmas trees. Fortunately, there are several environmentally friendly and creative ways to dispose of your tree.

1. Recycling Programs: Many local municipalities offer Christmas tree recycling programs. Trees are chipped into mulch for public gardens and parks, contributing to local green spaces. Check with your local waste management department for specific details and drop-off locations.

2. Garden Mulch: For those with a garden, your tree can be chipped into mulch to protect and enrich your soil. This not only recycles the tree but also benefits your garden come spring.

3. Wildlife Shelter: Placing your tree in your garden can provide shelter for birds and wildlife during the winter months. You can even decorate it with bird-friendly ornaments like strings of popcorn and slices of orange.

4. Firewood: If you have a wood-burning stove or fire pit, consider cutting up your tree to use as firewood. However, it's important to let the wood dry out sufficiently first, as fresh pine can create creosote buildup.

5. DIY Projects: For the crafty, the tree's trunk and branches can be repurposed into coasters, candle holders, or rustic decorations. This can be a fun project that gives your tree a second life.

6. Fish Habitat: Some communities collect Christmas trees to create habitats for fish in local lakes and ponds. These submerged trees provide shelter and breeding areas for fish, enhancing local aquatic ecosystems.

7. Composting: If you have a compost pile, you can add your tree to it. First, remove all tinsel, ornaments, and lights. Then, chop the tree into smaller pieces to help it decompose more quickly.

Each of these disposal methods not only takes care of your tree but also benefits the environment in various ways. So, as you bid farewell to your festive tree, consider these sustainable options.

Holiday Schedule Changes for Garbage and Recycling Pickups

Residents of the city and unincorporated Volusia County should note changes in garbage and recycling collection schedules due to the upcoming holiday season. On New Year's Day, Monday, January 1, there will be no garbage or recycling services.

In the city, the adjusted schedule will see Monday's collections shifted to and January 2. Similarly, Tuesday collections will occur on Wednesday, January 3. Collections usually scheduled for Wednesday will take place on Saturday, January 6.

For those residing in unincorporated Volusia County, the holiday schedule adjustment will follow a sequential shift. Collections for Monday will be moved to Tuesday, and this pattern will continue through the week, with Friday's collections occurring on Saturday.
