The Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported that In a rare airborne incident, a helicopter and a drone collided mid-air Saturday afternoon. The collision occurred near the Daytona Beach Flea Market, involving a helicopter operated by Leading Edge Helicopter Tours.

Despite the mid-air collision, the helicopter pilot managed to land the aircraft safely, averting a potential disaster. The Sheriff's Office said that the drone, which was about 180 feet in the air and recording a video at the time, was completely destroyed in the incident.

The helicopter pilot had spotted the drone but couldn't avoid the collision. As a result of the impact, the helicopter sustained significant damage to its rotor blade, estimated at around $60,000.

Following the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were notified and are likely to conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the collision. This incident highlights the growing concerns around airspace safety with the increasing use of drones.

New Florida Legislation Seeks to Ease Labor Restrictions for Teens

Flagler Beach Police Department

A new bill in the Florida state legislature, 'CS/HB 49 Employment and Curfew of Minors,' proposes to relax labor restrictions for 16 and 17-year-olds. This legislation would allow these minors to work full-time, eliminate the ban on working seven consecutive days, permit overnight shifts on school nights, and change break requirements. Introduced by Republican Linda Chaney, the bill argues for treating 16 and 17-year-olds more like adults. However, Democrat Anna Eskamani has criticized the bill for its contradictory stance on the maturity of minors, especially in comparison to state laws on abortion. The bill's fate will be decided in the upcoming legislative session, starting January 9th, and depends on the approval of both legislative chambers and Governor Ron DeSantis.

Holiday Schedule Changes for Garbage and Recycling Pickups

Residents of the city and unincorporated Volusia County should note changes in garbage and recycling collection schedules due to the upcoming holiday season. On New Year's Day, Monday, January 1, there will be no garbage or recycling services.

In the city, the adjusted schedule will see Monday's collections shifted to and January 2. Similarly, Tuesday collections will occur on Wednesday, January 3. Collections usually scheduled for Wednesday will take place on Saturday, January 6.

For those residing in unincorporated Volusia County, the holiday schedule adjustment will follow a sequential shift. Collections for Monday will be moved to Tuesday, and this pattern will continue through the week, with Friday's collections occurring on Saturday.
