Calm Seas and Sunny Weather Attract Many to Local Beaches

Daytona Beach

The arrival of the New Year brought with it a beautiful day and a significant number of visitors to Daytona and Ormond Beaches. The weather conditions were ideal, with calm seas that were perfect for swimming and paddleboarding.

The beaches attracted not just local residents from around Florida but also tourists from Canada and the northern United States. These visitors were drawn by the warm weather and the opportunity to enjoy the beach for the first time in many days. Lifeguards were on active duty, ensuring the safety of everyone present.

Great White Sharks Join Winter Snowbirds in Daytona Beach Migration

Daytona Beach, a popular destination in Florida known for attracting winter visitors, is now gaining attention for being a hotspot for great white sharks. OCEARCH has reported the presence of a large great white shark, named Breton, measuring 13 feet and weighing 1,437 pounds, near Jacksonville Beach. This shark has been tracked moving southward, with a recent spotting off Flagler Beach, just north of Daytona Beach, on New Year's Day.

Earlier in November, another great white shark, smaller in size at 10 feet and 460 pounds, was also detected near Daytona Beach. These sightings are part of a broader pattern observed by marine researchers. Dr. Bob Hueter from OCEARCH explains that, similar to human snowbirds, these sharks migrate south during the fall as temperatures drop in the northern regions. This migration starts around mid-October and typically lasts until early December.

The sharks, during this migration period, are found off the southeast coast of the U.S., particularly along the Florida East Coast. Many continue their journey around the Florida Keys and into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Their offshore range is quite broad, extending from one to a hundred miles from the coast. This migratory behavior of great white sharks is a significant aspect of marine life, offering insights into the complex dynamics of ocean ecosystems and the importance of ongoing scientific research in this field.

Holiday Schedule Changes for Garbage and Recycling Pickups

Residents of the city and unincorporated Volusia County should note changes in garbage and recycling collection schedules due to the upcoming holiday season. On New Year's Day, Monday, January 1, there will be no garbage or recycling services.

In the city, the adjusted schedule will see Monday's collections shifted to and January 2. Similarly, Tuesday collections will occur on Wednesday, January 3. Collections usually scheduled for Wednesday will take place on Saturday, January 6.

For those residing in unincorporated Volusia County, the holiday schedule adjustment will follow a sequential shift. Collections for Monday will be moved to Tuesday, and this pattern will continue through the week, with Friday's collections occurring on Saturday.
